my wife and i agreed to move to the UAE if the CIC ended up taking longer than 10 months to process our sponsorship application. it has currently been 6 months, so there's 4 more months to go. i know that CIC works at a snails pace, so i'm trying to get myself ready for this possibility in advance.

the thing is that i sent my original marriage certificate with my wife's PR app, but i need that back if i'm going to take my wife with me to dubai. is there any way i can get my VO to make a photocopy of the certificate i've given them and then have them send the original back to me? i don't want to cancel the application right now since we're still willing to wait 4 more months. in the mean time i do want them to keep working on the app (or to put it more accurately, keep it in the queue so it can collect dust for 4 more months).

I guess in hindsight, you should have made a copy of it (and any other original documents) before you submitted your application.

I can't imagine that CIC would take the time to make a copy for you now.

Good luck!

no, pakistani applicants are required to submit originals unless otherwise noted.

I think maybe what Ponga meant is that you should have kept a copy for yourself?

That's exactly what I meant. ;)
oh i've got copies of everything i sent, but i do still need the original marriage certificate because i'll need to get it attested at the UAE embassy for my wife.

what i meant in my original post was that i wanted the CIC to keep a photocopy and give the original back to me.

The caveat will be when CIC asks why you need the original. I don't suppose you'll want to disclose your `Plan B' to them, right?

i've never lied to them so i'll be truthful if/when they ask. i do understand the consequences, and i hope they understand that the only reason i've got a plan B is so my wife and i can be together again sooner rather than later.

If you got married in Canada, you can just order a new one at the provincial vital statistics department website. why bother with CIC at all for that?
Also, it will be a more recently issued one, which in some countries can be an issue.

Are you a citizen or a PR? If you are only a PR there could be nasty :) consequences if you and you wife leave Canada in the process. Also, if the process is "inland" and your wife leaves Canada CIC could revoke the process.

no, i got married in pakistan. i guess the best option here is to ask my wife to request another one and keep it with her for now.

i'm a citizen sponsoring outland. as a sponsor, i'm required to stay within canada for as long as the app is in process. if i don't hear anything back from them within 4 months from now (that's 10 months total of processing), the plan is to cancel the sponsorship app and permanently move to the UAE.

i'll keep em in the loop either way.

As a Canadian citizen, you are NOT required to be in Canada during the sponsorship process. That requirement is only for Canadian PRs.
