Been a silent reader for ages. Thought I'd chime in regarding Gatineau and Quebec in General.

I live in Ottawa (FSW 0 - AOR July 27th 2019 - PPR October 31st 2019) Landed just before xmas that year.

Cost of living in Quebec is cheaper, even with their higher taxes, rents are better and so is car insurance.

Now living in Gatineau you can definetly get by with english, and find a job on the Ontario side (its roughly a 10 min commute) You can also get by with english in Montreal, but your job opportunities might take a hit since they give priority to french.

I stayed in a short term rental in Gatineau (during the curfew ) before I got my job and moved to downtown Ottawa. Barley noticed the commute tbh.

One thing to note is that french canadian is quite a lot different especially in daily conversations, I learnt french from france (B2/C1 level) and I struggled a bit haha. If you go to deeper Quebec, they dont really speak english there.

If anyone wants any tips or advice just reach out!

Rooting for the draws to come back!
I'm actually between two choices. The first one is something near Vancouver like surrey or burnaby, and the second one is Ottawa-Gatineau, the problem there is the "intend to live outside quebec" so I will have to choose the ottawa side.

Canada PM Trudeau planning snap election, seeks approval for COVID response
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is planning a snap election for Sept. 20 to seek voter approval for the government's costly plans to combat COVID-19, four sources familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

Trudeau is set to make the announcement on Sunday, said the sources, who requested anonymity given the sensitivity of the situation. Trudeau aides have said for months that the ruling Liberals would push for a vote before the end of 2021, two years ahead of schedule.

It feels that if the don’t open the border after election is called, it would be worse for them, since it would mean they failed. I feel pretty good about the international border opening September 7th.

Nothing stopping you from going to Quebec after. You just need to intend on trying to live outside, but if opportunities are found to be better in Quebec, then nothing illegal about that.

Why do you think they are related topics? can't find the connection between the election and FSW draws
Same, I don't think election has nothing to do with it but IRCC is using everything as an excuse so we never know.

Job wise, you will have more of a market in Vancouver unless you are an Engineer or in IT, Ottawa has a good tech hub. Its still a smaller market but more affordable.

Just depends what you are looking for

Ohh yes: this makes sense. I feel more optimistic now. Not opening the borders by September 7 would give eligible voters the impression that the federal government is not confident or fully satisfied with their efforts so far. This would not be favorable for the liberals going into the polls

We're talking about the country who only have recently abandoned physical envelopes in ATM, and whose banking system is such a joke that it takes more than one day to send funds from your chequing account to your credit card. Are you surprised?
What do you mean by this? I can transfer money between accounts and pay my credit card instantly either via web or mobile.

Interac transfers are also instant.

Unless I misunderstood and you are referring to international transfers

I'm actually a computer science engineer and I'm currently working as a web developer.
So you think that Ottawa is better than Vancouver for tech guys? I have to say that I've been in Montreal and in Vancouver and I find Vancouver landscapes far more impressive. But I don't actually have the experience working there.

I also have to catch up with my french... I'm in an A2 level but I've not been practicing for a while.

Was never the case when I used those services. They may have improved, it's been awhile. I'm still not able to transfer money to any other account in earlier than 3 days.

Oh yeah, they are the master of creating new excuses :) But I don't think EVEN IRCC would delay draws for the election. But as you said, who knows? they can always surprise us with their non-sense excuses :)

Sorry I didn't mean that Ottawa is better for tech/IT than Vancouver, I was just saying that the market in Ottawa is a lot smaller overall, however it does have a tech hub.

Cost of living wise you might save a bit more in Ottawa/Gatineau when you factor everything in but if I were you, Id take a closer look comparing the pros and cons. Id probably still pick Vancouver if you dont mind commuting for a bit.

Since you mentioned that you were between Vancouver and Gatineau regarding costs of living I thought id give you what your options were (based on my knowledge)

Yeah in terms of landscapes and outdoorsy stuff, nothing beats BC.

Jeez that sucks man, which bank are you using?
Not gonna disclose too much on the internet but it's one of the mainstream ones. It takes Tims solid 10 minutes to give me a simple wrap so I don't blame my bank lol. Service is just slow in Canada in general.
