Canada is not perfect in every regard. I think biggest adjustment / shock is to understand that even though Canada is a G7 developed country there are so many things that you will find which are better done in less developed countries. If you are coming from India for example you may find banking quite restrictive, online transfer options are joke and telecom data rates are absurd. Similar experience when you try and file income tax. If you search online you will see car theft is pretty common in GTA and police does absolutely nothing other than writing a report and giving you a copy to file for insurance. For a developed country the number of scams/frauds I have heard about are astounding. One of the other most common one is the packers and movers fraud. Again police won't do anything. So yeah you may question is Canada that much better in many regards.
But then there are incidences like what @GandiBaat has given and you will see value in Canada. But in the end there are many small / big reasons to choose Canada over your home country be it India / South Africa / Nigeria etc.
I agree there is a bit of "Bel-coming" time in Canada. Though I have seen worse in India.
For instance I have changed residence twice in Canada and not once I had to think deeply about the frauds I had seen in India. There were different kind of frauds here but if you are coming from a place like India you will see it from a mile away. One example is : rental listings that ask for money to show you the house with a promise to send you the key by post after you pay. You can see this scam from a mile away. India scams are more gritty. You will meet a really shady real estate agent (because there is no regulation on this profession so it attracts all sorts of busybodies). The worst offender is rental in Maharashtra. You rent a place, the real estate agent comes back after year for renewal of lease and asks a brokrage for the second time (not making up this shit!). It is worst in Mumbai. That kind of thing is much toned down in Canada due to regulations.
Then, income tax. Filing income tax is much easier in Canada, though fines and penalties are heftier. There are many free income tax prepration and filing options. You can even pull up your past data directly from income tax servers. When you call income tax authorities, they actually help you. Lastly no fukken "send us signed copy on paper, please" bullshit. I hate it. Those are good things but Income tax department will NOT let any chance to put penalities on you.
Banking in Canada is indeed a joke! I mean about time they hear about things like RTGS. They have this weird dated Interac and it sucks. For any big transfer of money you need to use Wire Transfer which is slow as hell and costs money. Then there is this bullshit concept of keeping a credit card. I never needed a credit card in India because debit card works equally well. Here? No dice! You need to have a credit card or no payment online. That being said, cheques are fast! if you can drag yourself to the branch you can deposit cheque and it gets cleared in real time. Though funds are blocked at times for sometime to deal with fraud claims.
As far as frauds go, most of frauds I have seen are online or phone type which I have a sinking suspicion that they are coming from outside. I find it funny but it is not so funny for victims. I typically ask the phone types if they are from Jamtara Bihar. Giggles! There are no medical frauds for instance. If you see a doctor, they will not prescribe a medicine that you can only find it on a pharmacy outside his office. Though I have also seen one thing that I have never seen in India... Pharmacists take time to "fill" a priscription. Basically they have to fill pills etc in bottles to give it to you!! WTF! India, you go to pharmacy and get the medicine then and there.
