Hi Alex

CIC is not making the points directly mapping to your IELTS band.

They have their Canadian Language benchmark. if you get ielts band between 7-9 in all the four parts and obviously you will be in CLB9 - Total 24 points - So you will get the maximum

Suppose if you get 7 in all parts except listening just with 6. First they move you into CLB7 irrespective of your other better scores.

Now as per CLB7 - maximum is 16

Hope the below link help you for better understanding. In the below link, please see the first official language related info.

I am not trying to post a comment against someone or to confuse you. I try to help you as much I can.

Hi Everyone, Please correct me if I am wrong.

Interesting!! I see a CIC Call Centre telephone number: 1-888-242‑2100. Do you think I can talk to them and clear the confusion on the points calculation.

1. Did you taken Academic or General Training IELTS? Because FSW accepts General Training only

2. Your test must be less than 2 years old at the time you applied for PR - if its over two years old, your application will be refused due to incompletion

There is no confusion they have mentioned that on what scores in 4 section of ielts you will get 4, 5 and 6 and it also says its points per ability..

CLB Speaking Listening Reading Writing Points per ability
7 6.0 6.0 6.0 6.0 4 (in each reading and listening)
8 6.5 7.5 6.5 6.5 5 (speaking)
9 7.0 – 9.0 8.0 – 9.0 7.0 – 9.0 7.0 – 9.0 6 (writing)

your score
Listening - 7 = 4
Reading - 6 = 4
Writing - 7 = 6
Speaking - 6.5 =5
total 19

My score is
reading - 7
listning - 6
writing - 6
speaking - 6.5

what would be the total point. Is it 19 ? pls help

Thanks Johnny31 for your help.

It was Academic so I have to write the General exam now. Can you please tell me how much time it will take for the preparation of General IELTS?

Preparation time is different for everyone. How long did it take you to prepare for your previous IELTS test? should be around the same for this one

total 19

Hi Shona

Since you get 7 in writing you cannot take the points from CLB9 table. As per your Reading band you still stay in CLB7 not even CLB8 but you picked the points from CLB9 table.

They first check what is your language benchmark. Then they give the points, that's it.

If they consider by your calculation , tell me the points for the below bands (just an example)

Reading -9
Writing - 9
Speaking - 9
Listening - 6

Points - ? ------ Are you going to answer as 22?

IELTS has two options for the reading and writing tests: “General Training” and “Academic.” You must take the “General Training” option.

First official language (Maximum 24 points)
CLB Level Ability: Speaking Ability: Listening Ability: Reading Ability: Writing Points per ability
7 6.0 6.0 6.0 6.0 4
8 6.5 7.5 6.5 6.5 5
9 and above 7.0 – 9.0 8.0 – 9.0 7.0 – 9.0 7.0 – 9.0 6
So if IELTS
reading - 7
listening - 6
writing - 6
speaking - 6.5

CLB is:
reading -9 (6 points)
listning - 7 (4 points)
writing - 7 (4 points)
speaking - 8 (5 points)
=19

I would say, Had the intention been to give points as per CLB only, they would have said :

CLB 6 : 16 points
CLB 7: 18 points and so on and so forth.

What is the reason for giving breakup for each ability and why in the form they have given points basis each of the four abilities.
So as per that matrix, one has to match CLB level for each of the abilities separately not in totality.

Eg . I can be at CLB 8 in Speaking but not in writing.

I am 100% sure that CIC will consider each of the abilities separately while assessing CLB levels.

One thing is for sure below a certain CLB in any of the abilities, one might have to reappear for the IELTS exams. :)

HI,
How mch points i will get for following ielts score

L R W S overall
7.0 9.0 6.5 7.0 7.5

As per my understanding i fall in CLB 6 which is equal to 16...plz clarify the confusion
Regards,
