Although I know very less of the UK, so can't really comment about life there. But when it comes to how a human mind works let me share an example.

After staying in US for 2 years (having lived in India all my life prior to that), I visited a relative in UK. The first thing that I noticed was gas (aka petrol) price which was about 2.5 to 3 times more in the UK. I also felt the roads in UK to be much narrower than their counterparts in the US. And I shrugged in disbelief (which now I find funny, since I had lived most of life in India but I guess just got accustomed to seeing US roads in the last 2 years)!

Next I also noticed my uncle's reaction (which was sort of wow!) when he heard what a person was getting paid in the US after grad school which was about US$ 60-65K versus what my cousin was getting paid there after his master's (UK £ 35-38K). Then the price of a car, if it was USD 26K in USA the same would cost UKP 26K here; and if a lip balm costs USD 1 there it would cost UKP 1 here. Cost of living would also either compare similarly in both countries or UK would be a little expensive at times, if one were to compare the cost of living especially in London.

From that day till now my mind just can't accept UK as a 'better' place for some reason. I guess some of the things my friend shared, who moved from US to UK (or rather had to move), also didn't make the comparison any better in my mind like higher tax rates, lower quality of life, higher unnecessary government spending in UK on benefits to the under-privileged (i.e. providing bigger homes for people with bigger families who can't afford it etc.) May be some of these facts are distorted / out of context but I am just sharing my view. Hopefully I don't offend anyone (especially from UK)! ???

PS - I am sure cost of living in Canada (as well as property prices) should be quite favorable in comparison to that in London. In every place good school districts are more expensive though!

PPS - Government cost pressures also come in developed countries due to benefits the government has to provide to its aging population. I hope with so much immigration in Canada their population might still be a mix of a lot of the younger lots. Having said that I am not an economist by any stretch of imagination LOL!

UK Education system is also different, it's 12+3 like we have in India, so most students here need a master's degree to find a job.

Pretty good comparison between UK & US, Oscar7. I agree everything's expensive and overtaxed here in the UK, especially after my recent trip to US. Too many too easy to exploit benefits. Bad weather and poor public schools.

But I think Canada's got similar benefit system, higher taxes and free health care on offer too. US is very different from Canada, but UK in terms of system isn't that different I think.

Are you planning on showing the settlement funds from the scholarship money that you get?

NO, never. Why do you think so? If she got excess amount over scholarship and if that excess amount is equal to settlement fund, I see no problem.

I have sufficient amount that i had presented with my file but since i dont work now and i spent 5-10% it and now i got my scholarship. is there any problem if i show my scholarship and the previous money both as my funds? its mine and is liquid. then whats the harm?

So it is legally unencumbered and owned 100% by you and government don't give you any binding how to use it. My friend Oscar might think in in the strict consideration of ethics, may be; it's debatable issue. :-X :-X

I am not sure if there could be problems or not. If you have anyway sent the bank details with a large transaction in it, suggest waiting to hear on your application from CIC. In time it will be clear what they ask, and then we can plan a response accordingly. Sit tight and enjoy the waiting game until then. I hear they give a 30 days time period for any explanation they need and clarify upfront what they want answers on. Who knows as Century says Ph.D. is what Canada prefers and might not ask for anything.

May 14th should take about a month from today, if not more! I think may be slightly more possibly!! Enjoy!!

No, my previous bank statements donot show bulk transactions. My scholarship is credited to a different account that i did not show earlier. I guess you guys are confused on the type of fellowship. No such rules are there. Its for PhD students.

Hi,
With regarding Work Experience, are CIC very strict with the details of the Letter of Referrals? Here are my concern:

-All my Letter of Employment only states that I'm a full time employee but not the number of work hours.
- All my Letter of Employment only states the my salary in month and not annual
- One of my Letter of Employment only indicate a very generic listing of my responsibilities only 3 bullets.
- While the other LOE only states that my duties is to be referred to the attached page.--- but told me to just list my duties and responsibilities and print it on a plain paper and attach it. Would that be acceptable? They said they will not print it on the company's letterhead paper. :o

This is what's written on the CIC website:

"It is a good idea to research how much it costs to live in the place where you plan to settle in Canada.

Bring as much money as you can to make moving and finding a home in Canada easier. Note, however, that Canadian customs regulations require you to declare if you are bringing more than C$10,000 into Canada. If you do not tell them, you may be fined or put in prison. These funds could be in the form of:

cash
documents that show property or capital payable to you (such as stocks, bonds, debentures, treasury bills, etc.) or
documents that guarantee payment of a set amount of money, which are payable to you (such as bankers' drafts, cheques, travellers' cheques or money orders)

You are misparsing the phrase. It is not "documents that show property" OR "documents that show capital payable to you," it is "documents that show (property or capital) payable to you."

Legally, a stock certificate (or its electronic equivalent) is a document showing your ownership of property. In this case the property owned is a fraction of the company that issued the stock. Cash is property too. This does not mean that real property (land, buildings and fixtures) can be used for settlement funds. They can't, because they aren't liquid.

Very Happy for you future_canadian. I will pray that the rest of your journey is as smooth as this. CONGRATULATIONS!

Thanks! I am now worrying much less, but won't stop worrying until the PR cards are in hand.

Hi guys
I don't,t really have settlement funds . but I am gonna borrow them but I can not keep them for long . but I can borrow them again if they asked for update later. So if I had to do this could I be rejected for that . do any body have information

Yes, you certainly could be rejected for that. If your VO checks into your account history and sees that you had the funds for a short time, then didn't have them again until they asked for an update, it is pretty obvious to them what is happening.

You could also be rejected for misrepresentation on your forms. Settlement funds must be yours and not borrowed from anyone.
