Does anyone else think this government is simply delaying the inevitable, and that they know that eventually the officers will get their big raises? This is basically a childish move by the government to temporarily punish the union without any regard to the fact it is screwing with our family's future?

This government exists to destroy unions and the wages and benefits they have fought for. That is their sole design. They don't give a shart what else they waste or who's lives they destroy. Remember these days when it comes time to vote.

Another example of fine Conservative management vis à vis unions:

It was the same thing at Canada Post. people retire and their positions do not get filled. Their worked get done by forced overtime. Complain about have to work more than 8 hours and walk over 15kms in -40C and you win a 5 day unpaid suspension.

The average person sees only the pay and benefits. They don't get just what a worker has to go through to get that.

We know that PAFSO will not bend, they eventually will get their raises, and the extra cost will be levied onto future visa applicants. It's win-win for both sides while we get the shaft in the end.
...but since there is little choice, so I would certainly be willing to pay extra for them to come back asap! :P

I think the government is waiting for September so they could issue back to work legislation & I would welcome that. these visa officer are already getting hefty salaries & millions of perks.

Actually, they are not. If you go back a page or two there are links to the negotiation documents and you can see for yourself exactly what they are asking for. In many cases they are only trying to stop going backwards in terms of income and benefits. For the qualifications they need to have and for the job they are expected to do their salary package isn't all that great. Asking for equal pay for equal work is fair. Striking after waiting nearly two years for their contract to be renewed isn't unreasonable either, no matter how much it may frustrate and upset people like us.

S'truth mate. Fair Dinkum.

If this union is going to labour board, why are they striking and causing so much financial stress on already in deficit economy? I am trying to understand .. If labour board can intervene and have govt come to table then why inconvenience thousands of people?
The govt is waiting till sept to legislate them back to work.. Some union workers on this forum will not agree with me as there is no such word as constructive criticism in their dictionary.

Absolutely and these hefty unfair salaries and perks are coming out of our pockets. Be it mp , minister or pm or any other govt employee.. The sun news report is indeed an eye opener..

There is a process that must be followed before the PSLRB can be implemented.

If your criticism was constructive then it would have merit. Unfortunately you think that well educated professionals should make minimum wage . That is not even realistic. This government is willing to sacrifice 100's of millions and potentially a billion dollars to save the taxpayer $4.2 million. Really you believe this? You must be a Conservative economist then.

I guess its the employers reputations at the line here.. No matter what happens employers doesnt bend down to the employee .. Because if that happens the chain of command would just fall.. + people seeing how employers give up easy would just trigger other employees to act the same way with the strikers to get what they want
