As I was asked to shed some lights on few chosen topics (Job Market, Income Benchmark, Living Costs, Tax & Benefits) by one of my fellow countrymen (Bangladeshi); I thought to open a new thread with an intention to help everyone here.

I wrote it with a mind meant for Bangladeshis and in context of Ontario. Here, it goes:

Job Market

Historically and currently, Canada has been doing well in the following sectors:
• Telecom & IT
• Oil & Gas
• Mining & Construction
• Banking & Finance
• Energy
Besides, professionals in medical, law and current IT field are always in demand and make good money in Canada. Although Canada is in shortage of health professionals; it's extremely hard for an IMG (Int'l Medical Grad) to get license to practice. Quality IT professionals especially with knowledge/experience in current trend (i.e. mobile app developer) are in demand. Entering into business sectors is highly competitive and hence the pay is less than average.

University of Western Ontario ranks top companies in Canada based on 3rd party publications:

Income Benchmark

(1) Survival Jobs:
$8 - $12/ hour (some Asian/Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi grocery shops/restaurants would even pay you $6 an hour)

(2) White Collar Jobs:
Though the following salary ranges are based on engineering/technical fields, these will vary to minimum extent for other fields:
• Entry-level: 50K – 70K/ year
• Experienced: 60K – 90K/ year
• Individual Contributor (Team Lead/ Manager): 80K – 120K/ year
• Sr. Management: 100K – 160K/ year
• Director: 150K – 300K/ year
• VP/SVP/EVP: 200K – 450K/ year
• CEO: 500K – 2M/ year
To differentiate between min and max, employees at Medical & Health, Oil & Gas, big IT companies etc. would touch the top level whereas entry-levels at business sector would start from bare minimum (but top level employees would get same or even more!)

Ontario discloses the salary (>100K/ year) of its public sector employees (Ministry/municipality, school/college/university, hospital/health service etc.), commonly known as the “Sunshine List” every year. Here is the link:
http://www.fin.gov.on.ca/en/publications/salarydisclosure/

Living Costs

(1) Accommodation
1-bed unit: $700 - $1100/ month
2-bed unit: $800 - $1300/ month
* 1-bed apartment can go up to $3000 depending on the location and luxury. I've listed the average for middle-class people.
** If utilities are not included with the rent, that would cost you an extra $60-$100/ month.

(2) Transportation
Monthly pass (Bus/Subway): $60 - $100/ person
Gas: $1.10 - $1.35/ litre (current)
Car Insurance: $150 - $300/ month (depends on variety of parameters)

(3) Food
Family of 2: $200 -$400/ month
Family of 3 & above (with children): no idea!!! (Must be more)

(4) Others
Internet: $40 - $$65/ month
Cell Phone: $30 - $70/ month (depends on what type of plan you're interested in)
Home Phone: $15 - $30/ month
Cable TV: $30 - $70/ month
* But if you bundle 2 or more from same service provider, you would save some.

Tax

(1) Consumption Tax
Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) is fixed at 13% on all goods (exemption: few child/feminine products) you buy in most provinces incl. Ontario. It's same as VAT in Bangladesh.

(2) Income Tax
Income Tax is mainly divided into 2 parts: Federal & Provincial; collected by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). While the Federal is fixed for all, the provincial cut varies based on which province you live in. On top of your income tax, you have to pay for Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Employment Insurance (EI).

All Tax Rates: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/llrts/menu-eng.html

Tax is calculated based on income brackets. The above link will tell you everything.
Generally speaking, it varies from 25% to 35% for an income range of 40K – 100K yearly.

Benefits

I personally never had any of the following but GST/HST returns. No. 3 EI benefits are only for those who worked in Canada, paid EI regularly and lost jobs for unforeseen reasons. But it's highly not recommended.

(1) Tax Benefits

Hoquebd

You're welcome.

I don't have a child yet and never had student loan from OSAP, so can't really give you much details. But if you follow the links, it would tell you everything you need. If you still need to clarify something, let me know.

Great Work Rossie ....... Keep it up

Rossei,

Great Job. +1 for you.

I just have a question regarding the engineering jobs: Do employers prefer recruiting companies to hire engineers? or is it better to apply directly through the company websites?

I am an experienced (8+ years experience with Professional Engineer License in the USA) Mechanical Engineer, and have applied for jobs through company websites, however, I did not receive any response. May be because I am applying from the USA.

Please throw some light on this. Thank you.
