Rossei,

Great Job. +1 for you.

I just have a question regarding the engineering jobs: Do employers prefer recruiting companies to hire engineers? It depends on the employer as well as size of the company, large company usually hire head hunters or is it better to apply directly through the company websites? Try both but don't pay any fees to any recruiter or recruiting firm. If you have a LinkedIn profile, try to connect with professional people related to your work and where you want to work.

I am an experienced (8+ years experience with Professional Engineer License in the USA) Mechanical Engineer, and have applied for jobs through company websites, however, I did not receive any response. May be because I am applying from the USA. Are you permanent residence of Canada or Canadian citizen? You will need LMO if you are not PR or citizen of Canada. Which province are you applying? Alberta was best for engineering jobs but nowadays the hiring is very slow and lots of company started to lay off its employees....keep trying....it also depends on your luck.

Please throw some light on this. Thank you.

scorpion_ca, thanks for your response. Yes, I am trying both - recruiters and direct company websites. I am trying using LinkedIn too. No luck yet. I have PR from Canada (Alberta Provincial nominee). I am trying in Calgary, and Edmonton.

The reason I am thinking is that as I am applying from USA, the employers may be little bit reluctant to call. You are exactly right, job depends on the luck.

So, Alberta job market is not good now-a-days?

You could mention on your cover letter that you are a permanent resident of Canada though you are working in USA at the present time and you will be able to join within 2/3 weeks once you receive offer letter. Try Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie or Saskatoon. Best of luck.

I beg to differ to this point. In my experience, most large companies who have the manpower and revenue to run recruiting in HR tend to hire themselves online. Not that they don't hire any agency at times in need of specific skill set. Smaller companies rather hire recruiting firm to search on their behalf as they don't hire that regularly and as a result, it proves cost-effective to them.

No regrets but I never had to look for survival jobs. But if you're looking for any SALES jobs (or other survival jobs), GTA would be best as it has the largest consumer community. Don't know about Alberta.

Try craigslist sales postings:

I made a topic on Co-op Program. Not that it matters to new immigrants much; but you must know about it if you're going to universities/colleges.

Yes, you have to pay both. And no, it won't sum up to 50% of your income. For a yearly income between 50K - 130K, you would probably pay 25% - 35% tax.

Calculate your TAX from CRA's web info:
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/fq/txrts-py-eng.html

Thanks Maddy.

One of the forum members, emceemouli had made a Google site in regards to new immigrants in Canada. There is a lot of good info on Calgary, AB. You can check this out if you haven't already:
https://sites.google.com/site/newcanadianimmigrants/living-in-alberta/living-in-calgary

I've never been to west coast, so can't really suggest anything randomly. But if you need some specific info, I can search for it and let you know.
