The only option if you're still studying is applying for the Off-Campus WP. It should let you work FT during vacation, like Christmas, Easter, Reading Week, or summer and PT during the school year. But, no you cannot apply for a Regular WP and benefit from all its advantage because your main reason to being here is your study. You'll have to choose between WP or SP if you ever get the regular one.
Note the OCWP was introduced in 2006, i think and before that no student were allowed to work off campus except those on COOP/Internship. We needed to depend on parents, awards, or bursaries because it was always a competition for us to get a job on-campus due to the limitation of jobs thee and Canadians who were also interested in getting jobs on-campus. Moreover, the year i first came to Canada was the year International student fought to have the right to obtain a job on-campus. My sisters who were university students went on strike 15 years ago to work and before that no International studdent was working in this country, at least legally. They had to finish their studies first and with no experience at all look for a job to work and gain the experience to file with Immigration under Skilled Worker.
So, if you can apply for OCWP or PGWP do it with much honor to those who never worked in Canada while studying in a Post-secondary institution. Send your application and read more
OCWP: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/e-services/off-campus.asp
It takes about 1 month to get it approved online and costs $150 only
PGWP: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/e-services/post-grad.asp
it takes roughly 2 months to get approved online and also cost $150, plus it makes life easier for us afterward because under the regular WP, employers need to prove no Canadians/PR holders could do the job (a real pain on the a%$&?..)
