Medicals completed : Dec 25th 2012
Applicant sent to Mississauga : Feb 14th 2013
Application Received : Feb 15th 2013

So now what... when is the file number created? it seems there is a place to check status online (maybe after some time)

now..waiting! you might (or not!) get an AOR ( acknowledgment of receipt) with your file number and UCI. You might also get the approval email/snail mail right away. The first communication from CIC will give you the file number and with that you can check online. Until then, nothing to do!

it's too early to be tired of waiting! seriously - don't even think about it ( I know it's hard) before you reach the 1 month mark ( at least!) - stage 1 is the easiest part, stage 2 is longer, and there is more at stake (stage 1 is a formality for most cases, as most sponsor qualify. in your case: your sponsor lives in Canada already, she has a job and you live together - stage 1 is not a worry).

I looked on the CIC website and followed the link for "check your app status". I picked PR outside Canada and the next page made me choose a category to which none applied to me. Where is the correct place to check?

correct one for you is sponsorship, not PR outside of Canada - that's for people applying through one of the economic immigration programs.
