My parents are in Canada presently on visitor visa. The validity date on the visa is of 2032. They arrived in late November 2022. Their passports were not stamped with any dates at the Toronto airport, but I guess they can stay till 6 months at a stretch, which would be May end. However, I would like to increase their stay by another 3-4 months. Wanted to understand how to go about it and if I can start the process now or wait till April end to start the process? Thanks in advance.

Apply ASAP online for a visitor record on the canada.ca website. Once you apply, they are considered "in status" even if the visa has expired until they hear back from the CIC. Right now the processing time is 175 days so technically they have legal status as visitors for 175 days or until they hear back from CIC regarding their extension application.

Thanks. Any reason to apply in April and not March. The process says we should apply “ at least 30 days in advance”. I guess that means we should apply latest by April, but can apply before as well. Is that understanding correct?
Applying at least 30 days in advance is a recommendation not a requirement. To get the most time out of an extension you should apply right before the current stay expires.Would add a few days as a buffer in case you run into technical difficulties. Some leave it to the day before expiry and run into a processing problem which creates a much bigger headache.

The 30 days is a recommendation and not a requirement. I would recommend applying for the extension in the first week of May.

Does just submitting the application start their stay extension period (until CIC reverts back with a decision) or is getting some sort of acknowledgement back from CIC needed to ensure that the extension request/ application has been received and continuing to stay back in Canada will not be considered a violation of the 6 month initial allowed stay ?

Thanks

They are under implied status while they wait for a response but must remain in Canada.

You should hear about the rest of your family soon if they all applied together and your brother is under 18
