Hi All,

I will be working in Canada for one year from 11 August 2020. I expect my work permit to be approved soon.
QUESTION: Does anyone know how long prior to the work permit start date I can enter the country?

Hi. Have you got any information on this? I am in the same situation. I am not sure how long before start date of my job offer I can enter Canada. Also, do you know what is the start date of work permit? Is it when you enter Canada or when you start your job (according to job offer)? Thanks in advance.

Your entry date depends on the start date of the accompanying work visa you’ll have/ should have. The work permit alone is not your entry document.

The dates on the work permit should match the dates on the work visa.

There's no such thing as "work visa" in Canada, you may be confusing with the US. We only have work permits here.

When you get approval of a work permit for the first time, you'll get a letter of introduction. That's the letter you have to show at any port of entry when entering Canada for the first time, and that's when they'll issue you the work permit, if everything is ok. So that's when your work permit starts.
Usually once you get the letter you can come to Canada anytime, but right now there might be restrictions on this for new permits due to the pandemic.

For every work permit i’ve held in Canada, i’ve needed a corresponding entry visa. It might not strictly be called a “work visa” but it does have the classification “worker” on it. At least mine did. Hence my response to that effect.

We have eTA or Electronic Travel Authorizations but they are not needed separately for those who already have an approved study or work permit, since eTA will always be automatically issued when the letter of introduction is presented at port of entry and each eTA lasts 5 years.
