Does submitting a PR App (Outbound US) negate Visitor Status Extension request?

Haha! Thanks. Do you mind me quickly asking how your husband handled the required purchasing of an FBI background check? The wait for the results is like 13 weeks currently... I imagine I can pay for it and just include the receipt, then forward it along to them when I finally get it? I think that'll make my process longer than the 4-6 months ppl are saying on here.

It'll be funny because they'll get a boring FBI report, I've never even been pulled over in the US all my years!

I included a note saying I would mail it later, as soon as I had an application number from CIC I mailed it to them with a note again. They know the check takes a long time!

Awesome! Thanks! And congrats on your landed status! I'll post here as I compete the application for PR and post if I have any more questions. Do you have any pointers for specific part of the application? To make the process smoother?

If it makes you feel better, my (American) husband was approved for something like 7 visitor extensions before they finally refused one. And the only reason they refused is because we forgot to pay the fee. I would not recommend trying that though

Please pardon my ignorance if there's a perfectly obvious explanation, just genuinely curious as I am sort of considering this for the future: if one stays in Canada as a visitor and extends for so many times, what exactly does/can he/she do there, when he/she can't legally work?

pretty much nothing, except be a visitor. you can't work for a canadian company/customer. you CAN work remotely for non-canadian employers. you can also take classes that are less than 6 mo and do not provide credit towards a full time program. Also, in some provinces, a visitor who is married to a canadian citizen can be exempt from paying international fees for classes. i know this is true for ontario. not sure of other provinces.

I applied Outland in August, had 2 visitor extensions. In November I was given a 1 year VR at the border, since then I never had an issue crossing into the US and back, some weeks I would cross a few times. I always carried all my paperwork and receipts but never needed it except to get the VR.
I got my COPR on Friday and landed yesterday.

Can you tell me a bit about the rules at the border if I decide to cross over to go shopping or something to that degree? I haven't crossed since I came back in September. Does the border crossing with my VR reset my status every time I go back and forth? I've heard some odd stories.

technically it should, however in reality it's not the case. for the most part, CBSA will honor the VR and allow you in for that amount of time without issue. If you get an officer in a bad mood or wanting to prove a point, they *may* not honor that. I've never really heard of that happening, so I think you're safe as long as you bring your VR with you, and i would recommend always carrying proof of your application (even if you are still working on it) and pay at least 1 fee so you have a receipt to show them. There are many people who cross with VR's and never have an issue.

You can volunteer. I have been volunteering at a long term care home for over a year while being here in Canada.

I'm waiting for the paperwork to be delivered officially, but the document that was uploaded online says 'PERMIT - VR' for 1 year. In addition the intro to the letter says "your application to remain in Canada as a temporary resident has been approved. A secure document has been mailed to the address that you provided when you made your application."

That's only for inland applicants and you have to send the OWP with the PR application. If you're applying outland you cannot get a work permit through a PR application.
