The reason is the government... the Minister of Industry, Science and Technology in an speech (when he was visiting McMaster's innovation park) said something in these lines: "we, government of Canada, are not interested in hight tech development and industries and we simply will not spend to expand in that area.... we are just looking forward to hold on to our health care in Canada and if we develop universities to support us in that level, we are going to be happy"ADUFE said:"It is understandable for us "Canadians" to feel offended when criticized however that is the unfortunate truth. Canada is not the place for advanced degree holders. That is very unfortunate for the future of our country."
Sooooo true!

Canada doesn't have its own car brand but it has its own aerospace brand building commercial, private and military aircrafts and also parts of the ISS and builds cars for multiple foreign brandsADUFE said:This so-called networking is just legalized nepotism as far as I am concerned, and it's the reason why Canada cannot compete on the global arena because people are hired based almost entirely on who they know and not what skills and knowledge they possess.
It's the major reason why Canada is not an innovative society; they are the only country in the G8 that does not even have its own car brand! Whilst so-called developing countries like Malaysia, India produce and export their cars.
forget about a car factory... the situation is worse than this!! much worse!!ADUFE said:This so-called networking is just legalized nepotism as far as I am concerned, and it's the reason why Canada cannot compete on the global arena because people are hired based almost entirely on who they know and not what skills and knowledge they possess.

very well said, the very near past tells us of a governement reached out to help the US by buying airplanes without even discussing the issue in parliment ... the same governement who eliminated R & D defense budgets...the contract and its maintenance are able to push forward R&D!!!mjtajik said:forget about a car factory... the situation is worse than this!! much worse!!
let me tell you the story of Steel co. (of Hamilton city)... one day, their competitor in US decided it is going to be easier if they kill their rival in Canada and eat up the whole market... but based on the law and union rights they couldn't... so they lobbied the government of Canada and Ontario.. the government gave a go ahead to the sell out with the promiss that the us rival will not close the factory untile the next 10 years and will pay all sorts of fees in the case of closer and so on... and despite the protest from the unions the deal was done... less than 1 year after the deal, the factories were closed down, the company was chocked up by the debt that was forced upon it by the us rival (so they couldn't pay the whole pension) and tens of thousands of workers were laid off... flash forward two years later, the Hamilton city is reeking with drug addicts, homeless people and so on... the east of Barton St. is like some war torn eastern European country... and no one from the government took upon the promises that they gave to support the industry :-[
