I'm sponsoring my US husband and finished filling most of the applications. Now I'm thinking to do the medical first and then police check...does that sound right? cause the medical can be good for a year but the police only for 3 months. When do I get these back or am I just sending the receipts while they send the results to immigration? We are using the Buffalo visa office. I read some people saying something like they haven't gotten the results back and it's been many months, so just curious.

Medicals and police certificates are valid for 1 year each...that's what I was told by the immigration officer. So do them both (I'm not sure how long it takes to get a police certificate in US) and send them both with the application :)

Police cert must not be more than 3 months old when u submit

They are BOTH valid for a year. The caveat attached to the police certificates is they must not have been issued more than 3 months prior to the submission of the application. Submit your FBI request ASAP, as it is taking 9-12 weeks right now for most people to get them back. Hold off on doing the medical until the last minute, to maximise its validity.

So basically do the FBI now and then when I get it back do the medical? when you say get it back, do you mean they will be sending it to my house? how long does it take to get the medical back? so basically if i did both those now then I won't be able to send out my application for another 2 or 3 months? is that correct?

First you have to apply for your FBI check which is taking 9-12 weeks at the moment. Basically you'll have to anticipate when you will be getting the FBI check back (I suppose they mail it to you, Buffalo people can answer this better) and schedule your medical sometime around then (maybe for about 10 weeks after you submit the app for FBI check). Send the app off as soon as possible after you've done the medical (as soon as FBI check arrives). So yes, it will be 9-12 weeks until you can submit your application.

I applied for my FBI check on 10/18/11, and haven't received anything back yet. I just did the medical exam about a week ago, and the doctor said he is going to send the exam to Ottawa. My question is..Will that screw the application up, if we haven't sent any paperwork in?

Oh, I forgot to say in my last post that at the medical, the DMP will give you a form which you include in your app. They mail the results off, and once your visa office needs to look at your medical results, they check the paper you included in your app, and that is how they match it up with your results.

I'm not really an authority on FBI checks though, you should ask the Buffalo thread.

They do mail you your FBI report... or at least we hope they do as we are still waiting for my husbands to come in that we sent for on Sept. 21.... They did send us paperwork in the mail because the payment page needed to be filled out again. I think though that there was an option on sending a pre-paid fedex envelope but we didn't and now I wish we had incase it made it faster... I've seen that most people get theirs back and it can be already a month old so having all your forms filled in will take that stress out of it. We didn't have any trouble booking my husband's medical and we are keeping our fingers crossed that the FBI will be here by the 14th so once the medical is done we can send in our monster of an application!!

So if the visa office receives the results of our medical before we even mail off the application, the visa office will hold it until they receive our application and match it up? After my spouse does his medical, when should he get his fingerprints done? 2 months after sounds reasonably safe?

No no no, you definitely want to get the FBI stuff rolling (fingerprints) before you do the medical. Wait til the last possible minute to do the medical. And yes, they hold the medical info until they receive the application and match it up.

Hi had a question about the medical. My husband did his in may i submitted out application in july and the process started in sept, however there is still no update stating they have received his medical online. Should i be worried? ???

I thought I've been reading alll along to wait til the last minute to do the FBI stuff since it is only good for 3 months? and the medical is good for a year?

No you shouldn't be worried, it takes time for them to process PR's and if there was a problem of medicals they would contact you stating they need new medicals, just wait the time, plus i was told medicals from most places are valid for 1 year and if they have problem like i mentioned they will tell you

Btw, I only point this out because of how your question is worded, you do mean that when your husband (the applicant) does his medical exam and gets his FBI background check, right? As a sponsor you don't have to do either of those. You probably already know that, but your question is worded like you are the one who is getting the medical exam and background check done, and I just wanted to clarify.

Also, he should go ahead and call to set up and appointment for his medical exam with a doctor from the approvide provider list, but set the appointment for a couple of months in the future (say end of January, beginning of February). He should get his fingerprints and request his FBI background check asap. I requested mine in the beginning of November 2010, and I didn't get it until the end of January/beginning of February 2011.
