Do you have a link for the Hong Kong visa office?

Still, those statistics are encouraging.

Thanks for that...

FS
62% for HK, spouses and partners category (excluding skilled workers, etc.)

This is in line with what one of the immigration consultants told me. He said about 50% of his cases get refused (he is Chinese and only does Chinese cases more or less), then they appeal and win 90% of the time (although the appeals process can take 1 year or more).

The hardest part is waiting it seems like.

62% seems low. A bit discouraging. I wonder why there is such a difference between HK and Beijing? I'd love to get a breakdown of the numbers...like how many of the 38% denied have kids who are Canadian citizens?

Anyway, we'll be in the 62%!!

I also wonder if it makes any difference that I am white?

Perhaps the majority of the people denied are Chinese, i.e. both husband and wife.

I'm definitely not racist, but I could see this as a possibility.

Why would you being white make a difference?

It wouldn't...I was only curious...I thought perhaps that the VO might scrutinize Chinese people applying for PR on the grounds there could be immigration fraud involved (I don't agree with this...). If a white Canadian were to apply, perhaps the fraud issue would be lessened...again...I'm not promoting this line of reason, only thinking out loud.

Doubt race has anything to do with it.

My old neighbor in his 50s married a 40 year old Filipino from Hong Kong. He was white. Was denied on the grounds that his relationship was not genuine. They thought she was just using him to get to Canada. She waspregnant too. If anything they scrutinize mixed race relationships more as they know a lot of Asians and eastern European women like to use unsuspecting lonely white men to get to Canada. Happens a lot more than you think.

Your example is quite vague. Hard to tell why he was denied, but I know what you mean.

Didn't ask details but I just know he told me that they didn't think they were a real couple as apparently there are a lot of cases of older white men marrying younger girls, and then when they get here the girls ditch the men.

There are so many variables out there that the possibilities are endless. I know it sounds cliche to say, but each case is different so we cannot speculate on issues such as race. The only thing that we can do is just take our case step by step and control the things that we can (i.e. providing enough strong evidence to prove our case and answer any subsequent questions that CIC might have). If we are sincere and persistent in our efforts, we will be successful in this long and difficult endeavor.

The majority of the people denied are of Chinese origin, but I think this is partly because most of the applications are from couples where both are ethnically Chinese.
If you look at the sponsorship appeals on the CanLII website (www.canlii.org) and search for Hong Kong marriage immigration 2011 2012, you will get around 246 cases; around four or five have non-Chinese names. In almost all of the denied cases, the fact that it is a marriage of convenience is laughably obvious. Even some of the allowed appeals look pretty suspicious. From what you've written of the history of your relationship, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

How do you search just for the sponsorship appeals on this website i keep searching "immigration" and "sponsorship appeals"and am coming up with thousands of results that aren't in relation to family sponsorship immigration at all lol. Tips? :)

^ I'd like to know the same thing.

I searched and found a lot of appeal cases, and like CW wrote, there were only a few non-Chinese names, but mostly Indian, or some other race (non-white, i.e. not names like John Smith).

I don't know what to think about this...is the Canadian government discriminating? I read through a few of the appeals, and like CW wrote, they were so obviously fake marriages.

A friend was telling me that most fake marriages use an agency to help them get approved. My wife called an agency to ask a few questions and the agent said that they have a 99% approval record. So what is this? Corruption? How come these agencies can basically guarantee success? The agent my spoke to said they could help us for a fee - about CAD$4,500!! Are they insane? Why would any legitimate couple spend that kind of money when they can do everything themselves?? It makes no sense, and it makes me wonder if there are corrupt VO's pocketing kickbacks for helping people (with a questionable marriage) get approved for PR status.

Cheers,
FS
