Does anyone know how to edit, copy/share the spousal sponsorship tracking form that is used in outland groups. My excel skills are not great. It may be a useful tool for us to track everyone.

Hi, I had a query regarding applying for sponsorship for our new born child. I and my wife did you landing into Canada in Jan 2019 from the US and then came back after a week because both of us are working here in the US. We received our PR cards in March 2019, so that means that we have until Mar 2022 to move to Canada to meet the residency obligation for subsequent PR renewal. We are planning to move to Canada before the end of this year. In March 2021, we had a baby and I have initiated the process of getting his US passport.
I was going through some of the earlier posts here and wanted to understand -
1. if I can initiate and submit the sponsorship application from outside Canada or do I/my wife need to be physically be present in Canada to initiate that process?
2. Also, can someone shed some light on the most recent processing timeline?
3. I understand that my son doesn't need a visa to enter Canada and can stay for 6 months. If the processing timeline of the sponsorship application is more than 6 months, can someone share relevant links to the CIC website for extension of stay?

Thanks in Advance,
Tarun

Answer to 1.
Unfortunately, you have to be a resident of Canada to sponsor your child. There are three requirements for sponsor eligibility:
a. You have to be above 18 years of age
b. You have to be either Canadian Citizen/PR holder (PR should be valid)
c. You need to be residing in Canada

The same conditions apply to Co-signer (which in your case is your spouse) of the application.

Answer to 2.
It really varies from application to application. Normally when you submit your application to CIC, you get AoR (Acknowledgement of Receipt) in a months time (by again this varies; some applicants have received AoR within a week's time frame as well). After you get your AoR, you eligibility of sponsorship will be evaluated (again the time frame for this varies - I have seen some users on this forum who got their sponsorship application approved relatively sooner than others). After the sponsor eligibility is evaluated and CIC accepts your sponsorship application, you will be notified for getting Medical Examination done for your child (if you are in US, you can get that done fast I guess). As your child is a minor, there wont be any background check necessary.

Answer 3.
In order to extend your child's stay in Canada as a visitor, you need to apply for visitor record (https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/extend-stay.html).

However, I don't think that the sponsorship application period may go beyond 6 months period, especially when both parents and child are residing in Canada. If for any reason, the application processing takes more than 6 months, an easy way would be to enter US for three days and come back, this will give your child six more months.

Hope this helps.

1. No, you must apply from within Canada.
2. No. You can check the relevant threads and trackers, but quite uncertain.
3. Yes, you can extend fairly easily if necessary. Google.

Thanks Sfy for sharing your insights. Really appreciate it. I will initiate the sponsorship application the day I relocate to Canada. Also, thanks for sharing the link for the visitor record.
On your last point of re-entering US, is 3 days a mandate or will it also work if we just cross the border and come back the same day?

3 days was just an example, you may return back a day after. Usually, the immigration authorities at the US border ask for a valid reason for entering the US. If you and your spouse are having US visa, then just telling them that you would like to enter US just for a day, without any proper reason, might not sit well with them and they may even refuse you entry. So make sure you have a "valid" reason for entering US.

I got the medical passed on Monday for my child. The application is in progress, I also got a letter stating that the application was moving. Dont they do everything in Sydney?

This is what the letter says its the SA letter I think.

The Application for Permanent Residence for your relative(s) will be forwarded to a visa office for further
processing.

Application received March 18th
AOR May 9th
SA May 14th
Medical request May 14th
Medical Passed May 17th

I guess, after completing the processing of your sponsorship application, they might have forwarded your case to visa issuing office of the country your child is residing in....not fully sure though.

Well in that case, the Sydney office might have forwarded your application to CIC office near your city in Canada to get the permanent residence for your child.

Here is an excerpt from: Sponsor your spouse, partner or child: prepare for arrival
If your family members are already in Canada

They’ll have to meet an immigration officer to receive their permanent residence. We call this a landing interview. We’ll send them instructions about what documents to bring with them, and the time and place of their interview.

The suggestion that your child should return to the US for 3 days after the initial 6 months is not good advice. You should apply to extend their visitor status from within Canada. In many provinces your child will not qualify for healthcare until they can apply after they get PR so you should at least take out emergency medical insurance and you'll need to pay for routine care.

Yep and probaly they will give you more than 6 months if you are a PR, when you arrive they can give you a Visa for more time...
