Hey guys, I'm a bit confused about the OHIP coverages when you land to Canada as a PR. I've read that during the first 3 months you are not covered and need to get private health insurance. On the other hand, I've heard from people that when you land in Canada and apply for a health card, they will give you a temporary card or whatever and the 3 months is for the time it takes to receive the actual health card. Can anyone verify which is true?

Thanks

The OHIP Coverage for new immigrants can be obtained after 90 days form the date of landing. You can check it out at: http://www.health.gov.on.ca. However, you could obtain a temporary coverage by contacting some Private-non-Profit Corporations if the applicant has a condition requires hospital attending or in a few cases if a women is about to bear a child, giving a birth.
That's what I had been told by many Iraqi people here in Toronto.

Can we buy the private insurance from our home country too? Or it will not be useful in Canada?

It depends on what plan you purchase.
I think you had better get a plan from a Canadian Company; because you may get in troubles with Ontario Regulations.
