Hello everyone!

Pls walk me through, me and my husband got married in an Islam rites. Though I understand, someday - somehow he maybe involve in another woman (legally) being a converted Islam in the Philippines.
He works overseas and met a Naturalized Canadian Citizen and painful it is to be informed he is marrying her when she visits the Philippines in January. They are planning a civil wedding which I have not inquired yet if possible. He said he does not need to present a Cenomar but his conversion certificate. He said, he is marrying her with or without my consent. He even said that he can sponsor me and the Children to go to Canada if he wants to.
Painful it is to accept the fact but, I am less holding on to what he said; he will get us to join with him as soon as he is settled down there. It's painful to only believe to what he said but still I am not giving up the little chance that he will not totally abandon us.
My question is:
- would it be possible for him to marry in a civil rites in the Philippines?
- is his civil wedding give more rights to the second wife in Canada?
- can I seek assistance from Canadian government should he totally abandon us?
- can he sponsor us in the future as his first family?

Thank you and really appreciate your help.

well, if he is still legally married to you, and "marries" a second woman, CIC will not recognize that relationship as a legal marriage. if the marriage is not deemed legal in canada, then he won't be successful in being sponsored as a spouse in canada. more likely than not, if they submit an application, CIC will ask him for an interview.

If he lies about you in the application, then he is committing misrepresentation and CIC does not look too kindly on people who lie in PR applications. As his legal wife, you can call CIC to report your marriage to them so they know he's already married for when they start looking at his application.

Simple answer is "No". It is not possible for your husband himself to be sponsored as he has an existing marriage and relationship and hence his application for PR will be denied.

You say you married "in an Islam rites". Was your marriage ever officially recorded or registered with the Philippine government?

- it depends, is there any official record of the marriage between you and him?
- Canada does not recognize bigamy. If Canada recognizes YOU as his first wife, Canada will not recognize any other woman as his wife.
- You cannot seek assistance from Canada even if he abandons you.
- He can never sponsor you to come to Canada, unless he immigrates to Canada independently (as a skilled worker, etc.)

The one thing you can do, is to stop him from immigrating to Canada as the spouse of a Canadian. Do you have any records of your marriage? If you find out that your husband "married" this woman and that he is being sponsored for Permanent Residency, you should contact the Visa Office at Manila and tell them he is already married. Send them proof, if you have any.

If you husband says he needs to marry this woman so that he can sponsor you and the children in the future, do not believe him. He will never be able to sponsor you.

just want to add..
If manila office finds out he is married to you LEGALLY prior to getting married to canadian, he will NOT get PR. if he lies and gets a PR, he will never be able to sponsor you or your children - because they are not on his original PR application.

sorry about your situation.....

It would seem that this almost certainly fits the profile of a "Marriage of Convenience".
CIC should be made aware of the circumstances, so that they can come to an informed decision.

Yes, we are registered in NSO. He is putting in his application as married. What I do not get is the woman the one who is pursuing the papers.

Thank you all for the replies. Highly appreciated

no offense to anyone, but this query sounds more like from the dude himself, trying to get answers for his shady plan... coz i don't see him coming upto here and saying directly that this is what I am planning on doing... there should be a way to report such posts even to the CIC and they should be able to carry it out from there getting information on the IP address etc...

it sucks to wait 3-4 years for your spouse, and everyone suffers coz of such people...

if it is the lady herself (which i highly doubt) then I am sorry for your situation... simply report the clown to the Manila office... send them proof of your marriage with him beforehand and alert them to wait for his application... but don't jeopardize your own situation or safety due to it...

I believe (correct me if I am wrong) if this woman wants to sponsor your husband as her "husband", they will need a paper from NSO showing that they are married.

I don't know what this woman is thinking. Maybe she does not know the rules and laws, maybe your husband is deceiving her.

As far as I know, it is extremely difficult to get an annulment or divorce in your country. For this woman to sponsor your husband to come to Canada, they will have to live together for 1 year, or claim "conjugal". Conjugal means that the two people are not married on paper, but they are like a married couple in every way. However, conjugal is extremely hard to prove, and CIC is very strict.

In any case, IF your husband is sponsored to come to Canada (which I think is very very very difficult, maybe impossible, without your cooperation) he can never, ever, sponsor you to come to Canada. He Can sponsor your children to Canada, but only if he and this woman include the children in his application for sponsorship. For him to include your children in his application, the children will need to take medical exams.

I think the best thing for you to do now is to get proof that you are married (get a paper from the NSO?) and if and when your husband is being sponsored to Canada, send the proof to the Visa Office at Manila, and explain that this man is your husband, and that he said he can marry this second "wife" and sponsor you and the children to Canada later on. This is called a Marriage of Convenience, and CIC will NOT like it. They will put a big red flag on his name and he will never be able to be sponsored to Canada.

Just three words: marriage of convenience.

Why not try to get a work permit to enter Canada legally and then bring his first and only real wife and kids with him?

This story is so weird  ???
