Consequences of a delayed police certificate

For family sponsorship, IRCC gave us 2 months to send them police certificate from one of the countries. There was a delay in postal delivery and the application form to obtain the police clearance reached the police department after 1 month and 1 week. So there are only 3 weeks left till the deadline and we are not sure when the police department will send the clearance. It may take another month, which means we may not be able to submit police clearance to IRCC within the 2-month deadline. What are our options in this case? Should we contact IRCC in advance and ask for an extension of this deadline? What are the chances they would grant this extension? Would they reject our sponsorship application? Has anyone encountered a similar situation? Thanks.

I think best option would be to explain and send a webform.
Maybe someone who has encountered something similar can be of better help... but i'd suggest a webform.

When you are closer to the deadline, submit a webform (or email if you have direct contact) explaining the delay and evidence that you ahve submitted, rough timeline of when you expect.

They're usually too busy to spend time looking for files that have some modest delay in submission, frankly. The webform is just for extra insurance.
