Hello everyone,

I had a couple questions regarding inland vs outland common law sponsorship.

1. I was wondering what the typical wait/processing times were for each?
2. If there is a benefit over the other?
3. I am being sponsored by my boyfriend next month, however i'm planning on leaving the country (Canada) to visit my family for a couple months while the application is being processed. Does this require me to apply via outland? Or can I still do inland? Thanks!
4. If I do happen to apply via outland, how long am I allowed to stay outside of Canada to visit my family?
4a. Once I do come back, do I have to let the government know that I have returned, since we're in the middle of the application process?

Lastly, my boyfriend is graduating this August and therefore has no income at the moment and has no job offer for this upcoming fall. We are planning on living with his parents until he graduates. Will his income status/student status affect our application during the financial evaluation?

Thanks!

1. The posted times are 12 months for each. Outland tends to go a bit faster.

2. If you're applying outland and called to an interview, you have to do it in your home country. If you're applying inland, you can't leave Canada for more than 2-3 weeks and always run the risk of being denied reentry.

3. "A couple months outside Canada" -> outland.

4. You don't have to be in Canada at all for an outland application.

4a. No, you don't. Updating your address is always a good idea.

Lastly -> he will need to have a plan to support you for three years.

Thanks for the quick reply! My PGWP expires this August, since the processing time is 12 months and my permit will expire before a decision, does that mean I will have to stay in my home country until we get a response? Ideally I'd like to come back and be in Canada, as I'll only be visiting my family for a few months. Is it possible to apply for some type of temporary residence permit until we get a decision?

Lastly regarding the financial evaluation, we will be living at his parents house until he finds a job after graduation. If he writes out a full plan in the application, I'm assuming this would suffice?

Thanks again for responding!!

Depending on your citizenship, you require a TRV or eTA to return to Canada. If you have one, you would enter as a visitor.

He should get a letter from his parents confirming their financial support.

Hello everyone, thank you for the replies and sorry for bumping up a somewhat late post. We have agreed on applying via outland as I will be visiting my family and will be out of Canada for 4-5 months before returning again.

We have one more question: I have already checked online and I do not require a police check from my home country as I haven't lived there for more than 6 months consecutively, and I've spent most of my life in Canada after the age of 18. I noticed on the application PDF that a Canadian police check is not required, however does that change things if we are applying via outland? Thanks again for all of your help!

PCC requirements are the same.
