If someone were to marry in a religious ceremony in a foreign country and then get a torusit visa and have a civil wedding in Canada, how or will that affect them in applying and being approved for a permanat visa? Will it cause problems?

You can have as many ceremonies as you want. But you can only have one marriage certificate. It doesn't matter which country it is from, CIC accepts anything. As for the ceremonies, you can send pictures of them to CIC with your application, especially showing the various relatives who attended.

Ok so, even if they have done a religious wedding here, gets a tourist visa, goes there, does a civil wedding and applies within there should be no problem?

No there is no problem. But don't forget even with religious and civil marriage, you have to send proves to CIC about the legitimacy of your relationship.

What do you mean a civil marriage . You can't get a registrar to marry you again, but you can have a ceremony or a reception.

just want to mention that it's quite tough to get a visitor visa once you mention the existence of fiance or husband in canada. would be good if you apply for the visitor visa with tickets and show darn good reason to go back to the home country.

What she means by civil marriage is the liscense. In Brazil we say civil marriage and religious marriage - here in Canada it is usually all one ceremony where the Pastor or judge or whoever registers your marriage as legal. In Brazil they can be the same as well, but more often than not, they have 2 separate ceremonies because it is "easier" especially when marrying a foreigner.

I'm brazilian too in the end of sponsorship process ( finally!)
Let me know if I can help you guys with some info.
Good luck in your process!

Boa sorte!!! :)

What we need to know is if she gets in on a visitor visa, because there is a family event there, and they are planning on having a ceremony here without the license for her family and then do there civil marriage there because he is taking over a family business and it would be best for them together there. She has no problems with staying until the process is complete. What we need to know is if when filling out the spousal sponsorship part about wedding, date, location should they just use the canadian civil wedding? Will it raise questions as to her going in already with this other ceremony. They initially weren't going to but her family is very traditional. Her parents would not be able to afford going to canada.

the wedding date is the date on the wedding certificate. even i had a separate religious ceremony, which is the real wedding according to my wife :P, but official purpose it's always the one on the certificate.

So using photos for both would be okay? The one could be used more of proof of relationship, just not the legality of it. Correct?

Were you in Brazil when you applied? If not and you were in Canada, did you apply inland or outland?

No, I applied inland. I arrived in Canada with a tourist visa and after 2 months my arrival I got married.

They plan to have their civil marriage there. How was the wait time for you in the inland? Would you recommend it for a brazilian or is outland a better option?

I am inquiring for my son who is a canadian citizen, and his very soon to be wife brazilian. Our family has been living in brazil for almost 9 years. We also did the permanat visa process here. He has been back working in Canada for almost a year to prepare for her to move their with him once they are married. They have known each other for five yrs, dated for a year, engaged for 1 1/2 yrs. a pretty good amount of relationship proof, pics, letters, chats, gifts, etc.. She went to visit earlier this year and he is here right now on holidays. I wouldn't think their would be question as to genuinity. They are younger, he is 20, she is 19, but determined! So the outland, may be faster, and the only risk would be the possible interview in which she would have to fly back.
What is your opinion?? Any other brazilians want to throw in any ideas??
