Alhumdulilah my wife's status has been updated to Decision Made... Passport with visa should be coming soon...
Now we are planning for her trip and I had a question regarding Health insurance. According to my research, there is a waiting period of 3 months to be eligible for health insurance in Ontario. Does anyone know of a good private Medical insurance company in Ontario? The reason I ask is because My wife is expecting and we wanted to make sure she is covered in Canada during the 3 month waiting period.
I have coverage with my employer and my wife is listed in the coverage as a dependent(through sunlife) but there is a stupid clause in their policy that says only dependents who are "residents" are eligible for coverage. When I called them for clarification, I was told that in order for them to cover someone, he\she needs to have provincial health insurance so the employer insurance is useless for her.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I am sure there will be a lot of people to help you with getting insurance here [even sunlife could recommend you to a broker] and the OHIP rule for employer insurance is province wide for all insurance companies.

But you should be looking into this thread http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/important-ohip-eligibility-info-for-all-pr-applicants-residing-in-ontario-t56695.0.html;msg2518001#msg2518001 as you can get OHIP approved before the 3 month period. It involves a little leg work on your end but it depends how much it is worth to you and whether you want to save the insurance premium.

Hello r4z4,

When my wife visited me last year on a visitor's visa, I had gotten her travel insurance from Ontario Blue Cross.. it was about $75/month with no previous health issues. I was able to use my employer insurance to pay for her medical and dental. You should double check that with your insurance company again. "Resident" for tax purposes is different from "Resident" for immigration purpose.

Also, if you have health spending account, you can get the premium of her insurnace, covered under your HSA.

Thanks for the info... Unfortunately the appeals process mentioned in the thread that you provided would not apply to my situation... from my understanding of this thread, inland applicants are trying to waive the waiting period by having the appeals committee determine the exact date of residency\eligibility through CIC. Those people are already living in Canada and therefore they are trying to backdate their residency. This would not apply to out-land applicants like us.

Thanks!

$75 sounds very reasonable, I will get a quote from them.

I am not sure how to double check with sunlife... when I called them, they told me that my wife should not even be on my insurance because she is not a resident. They also told me to tell my employer to remove her since she is not eligible yet and the employer is paying her premium for no reason.

Hi Bro please dont panic and pray for the best... My wife's status was updated to decision made 1 week after PPR 1 and before she sent her passport.

To be on the safe side, I would recommend that you visit your local MP and ask them to check status of your application. MP would be the quickest way to check status.

when your status changes on the website do you get an email notification?

or do you have to constantly keep checking?
