I need to ask a question to Alberta residents:
I expect our application to be completed in 6 months or so. What does my hubby need to bring from Pakistan, to get a driver's license here easily and fast. Any tips shared would be greatly appreciated.

International driving license, few years old.

Pakistani License (Computerized Card in English) is valid for 90 Days in Canada. Meanwhile, he need to request verification from Pak Embessy vancouver and
appear for a written test to get one year Class-7 License (Trainee) which allows him to drive in presence of another full license Driver. Finally he needs to have driving road test at a registry to get Class-5 license.

i dont know about alberta but for ontario pakistani licence is helpfull,,,my brother had pakistani licence he got his license very easily..

plus read this in skill worker class about license

NOC means you will not have to attest photocopy of your old Pakistani license from Pakistan embassy in Canada so its much of less hassle. If you attest it from Pakistan embassy in Canada it would cost you $30 plus hassle.

But please not you will still have to take G1 or G2 test. Its nothing to do with NOC.

If your license is issued from Karachi please go to your licensing authority office in Karachi and ask them you need an NOC as you are moving to Canada. You will have to write an application so better write an application before going there in the name of SSP (senior superintendent police). They know what to do. As a sample you can also take photocopy of my NOC with you and show them you need an NOC like that. Thanks

Jazak'Allah waiting 110, MRS SAM, Syed Muhammad Asim, adv2244 and Amaw for your quick responses. Nice to know you guys are from Alberta and thanks to MRS SAM & Amaw for pitching in even when they are from Ontario.

P.S The link shared by adv2244 was really helpful. Here is a copy of FAQ from the site:

How does a driver from a foreign (non-reciprocal) country apply for Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) exemption?

A driver from a non-reciprocal country can go to any Alberta registry agent office and apply for GDL exemption. They must complete a GDL Exemption Application and surrender their original foreign driver’s licence along with required supporting documents such as confirmation letters or driving abstracts. The application is reviewed by the Service Alberta, Special Investigations Unit. If driving credit is approved, applicants may be exempt from the GDL program.

What is the benefit of being exempt from the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program?

Alberta has implemented the GDL program. A person with no previous driving history is required to complete full testing, beginning with a written Class 7 learner’s test. The driver is required to hold a Class 7 learner’s licence for a one-year period before becoming eligible to take a Class 5 basic road test. The driver is required to complete two years as a Class 5 basic (GDL) driver before taking the Class 5 advanced road test and becoming a full Class 5 driver. If a driver from a non-reciprocal country can prove they have two or more years driving history, they will be exempt from the GDL program. The driver must still write and pass the Class 7 learner’s test but once their application is approved they are eligible for an advanced road test.

Can a person from a non-reciprocal country apply for GDL exemption if they have less than two years driving history?

No, they will not be exempted. However, if they can prove that they have previous driving experience, their file will be credited with that driving time towards the necessary 2 year requirement. They will be eligible to take the Class 5 basic road test immediately after writing and passing the Class 7 learner’s test.
