I am from the U.S. and I am currently "visiting" my husband in Quebec for 6months. I drove my car to canada and I and having trouble finding car insurance. My current insurance will only cover me until the end of July. The situation is I would like my husband to be able to drive my car as well, So I have been looking into getting insurance in Canada that would cover both myself and my husband. I eventually plan to import my car (which I own) when my PR comes thru.
I have asked insurance companies in Quebec about getting insured and they said that they cannot insure me until I import my car.
has anyone else come across this problem and found a solution.
I desperatly want my husband to be able to drive my car so I do not have to drive him around.
Thank you in advance for any help.

They are correct. They can not insure it unless it is registered in Quebec. So you will have to find insurance in the US until you import. No insurance company in Canada can insure a car from the US.

This maybe something that I missed but if you are just "visiting" Canada could you not still be eligible to get insurance in the United States?

I was told by my insurance company that if I am staying in canada then they would only cover me for 6 months or until my current policy expires whichever is sooner. My current policy expires at the end of July. So after that time I will have to find other insurance. Also I am hoping to find insurance that would cover myself and my husband, so that he can legally drive my car as well.

Insurance is only one problem, your spouse cannot drive a US registered car in Canada.

I do have a legal residence in the U.S. using my sister's address. It is the same address that I have on my driver's license

Right, as long as you say that the car is 'garaged' in the states, then you are good to go. It's the same as claiming your residence as the USA for immigration purposes until you land. As you say, you are really just visiting. Your official residence will be the US address, so the same should go for the car.

Forgive me if i am wrong but i was told that a canadian citizen cannot drive an american plated car. I was told so by a canadian custom officer at Lacolle Qc as i was driving with my wife in her car plated state of NY. He also told me if the police officer wanted to be mean he could have the car towed if i got arrested. So i figure even if you are insured he could not drive the car since it is not plated in Quebec. First i would make sure that situation would not be an issue

My husband and I got pulled over in Ontario with my US plated car. He was driving but I was in the car. The officer said that it's ok for him to drive as long as the car owner is also in the car.. but right, if he was by himself the car would have been impounded. As long as you are also in the car though, it's ok. All we got that night was a normal speeding ticket :)

You can't get Canadian plates until you are a PR anyway so there's not really anything else you can do about it except to keep it legal through US insurance and registration, etc.

On a related note, my partner moved from Florida to his father's house in Pennsylvania for one day, then came to visit me in Canada while we finished preparing the PR application. During the one day, he never got a chance to get a PA license, and his FL license actually has a previous FL address. He's been with me in Quebec for 4 months now and I'm worried that his drivers' license might not be valid. Does anyone know?

I think your license is just valid until it expires, even if you move to another state. I do think when you get your PR you have to get it changed within a certain time period.
