LANDED..........
8-7-2015
I just landed yesterday and the border agent wanted to have my car imported. I said I wasn't ready (I haven't even exported my car from US yet but he said he didn't care about that :o). Anyway, he wasn't happy that I wasn't importing it right away (somehow that is illegal?? )
Question 1 - Is that right? (They said I wasn't supposed to not import my car that I drive in Canada after I become a PR although it's somehow perfectly legal for a non-PR person to drive her US car in Canada....)

Anyway, I am starting to look at what I needed to do to import my car and I have another question.

Once I get my car imported, what happens to my car?

Question 2 - Can I still drive the car with a NY license plate for a few weeks? I still need to go back to the US a couple of times to complete my move...

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Question 3 - Do I have to get a auto insurance in Canada right away or I can keep on driving my car with the US insurance (which is currently covering me in Canada) until my move is complete (sometime at the end of this month or beginning of August)?

1) He's giving you a little bit of a hard time. You have a 60-day grace period (at least last I remember) to import your car and change your registration/plates/insurance to Ontario and get an Ontario driver's license.

2) Yes, for up to 60 days

3) You have 60 days so you are are fine.

Thank you very much for your response.

So you didn't need to get this gap insurance that mapleson mentions then?

Can I import my car to Canada before I am done with exporting the car from the US? The immigration officer was so eager to import my car when I landed although I told him I hadn't exported it from the US yet, (and the only reason he didn't is because I didn'tt have the title with me.). I need to go back to the US to get my title and I am afraid they will tell me to import it again but shouldn't I export it from the US before I do the import process?

OK, I talked to the officer when I went through the border to the US side today and he said I should export it first before importing it, so I will do just that. Also, coming back into Canada was a breeze. He wasn't interested in interrogating me at all (perhaps because I am now a PR...)
