I just received my OWP (valid for two years). My license, car, and insurance are all American. I'm not ready to import my car as there are some recall issues that I need to have fixed first. What is the best method for insuring my car to ensure that I have proper coverage in Canada? Are there American companies that provide insurance specifically for these instances, or are there Canadian insurance companies willing to insure a foreign-registered car and driver?

Call your existing insurance company.
Don't give any info, just tell them that you are a new client looking for some general info regarding the insurance policy.

I just did that. They told me that because I'm moving to Canada I will require Canadian insurance. I tried to explain that my status in Canada is currently only temporary, but she didn't seem to understand. So frustrating.

1, CBSA will give you a temporary import permit, so you don't have to import the vehicle. With that contact the provincial motor vehicle branch about a temporary registration
