Many participants on this forum say, 'Luck plays an important part in your Canadian Immigration process.' With all due respect to others, I don't agree that luck plays an integral part in your Canadian immigration except you are part of pre-2008 set of applicants (without SELDEC before 29th March 2012), or hooked up with a visa officer that takes longer than anticipated for file review or likely admin delays.

Lets explain; what is luck and I'd like to keep this discussion within MI1 domain applicants because MI3 are more lucky than MI1 & 2 and likewise MI2 are luckier than MI1?

In my view:

(1) few MI1 applicants (due to load management) got transferred to PVO. Their files were fully ok & reviewed by LVO, hence they got MR immediately. That's luck, otherwise if they remain in LVO they had to wait until their turn comes after many months

(2) Visa officer had reviewed your file, luckily you were the last file (for the year) and BUZZ came, means visa quota over and hence your case is processed. That's luck

(3) By any means your file got re opened and you are 2009 candidate while being processed in late 2012, so after review visa officer shall directly send you MR. That's luck

(4) VO is sending a reply that background checks are in progress, say since 11 mo, this is not purposeful delay by visa officer. There could be a reason, probably shortage of visas. That's bad luck

(5) You sent the additional docs, little late, while visa officer got busy with other files. Your case got in pending for few more weeks until VO gets ready with your doc. That's how you delayed, that's bad luck

If someone feels that luck means - visa officer will pull out your file randomly leaving behind other applicants who had sent their full sets before you and VO gives you 80 marks (for a poorly managed set of docs or complicated educational history or missing marks sheet for spouse education or inadequate funds details creating suspicion) then I feel sorry. Its not luck, this is day dreaming!

Here, ppl should remember that, how VOs had rejected so many intelligent & knowledgeable candidates, just because their experience letter didn't share the JD properly. That's the tough luck!

Hence, the core of the subject is that, 'Prepare you file/set of documents with full care, review any single doc carefully by yourself, seek guidance of seniors if needed, read VO requirements again & again and attach as many as proofs you can for items where points are being awarded, and before your selection-decision is done try to arrange as many as evidences needed by VO.'

Because your luck or bad luck starts moment you sent a file which is incomplete or poorly managed, making life difficult for visa officer to ascertain facts about your case, and major circumstances changed (like previous funds evidences & addition in family) & you didn't update visa office.

Ideally, it is better to prepare file by yourself, without the help of any Consultant (as 1 only out of 1,000 are doing proper job) and its a long process having only frustration and Consultant could add more to it rather than reducing it!

I respect your comments and views......................but I still feel luck plays an important role :D.

To be lucky or be intelligent, which one is better? On a lighter mood I can quote a discussion between God and man.

God : Ask your wish, you want your child to be lucky or intelligent.
Man : Can I can make 2 choice?
God : NO
Man : Ok then lucky.
God : Why ?
Man : I have seen many intelligent people working under lucky people.

LOL... ;D

Adding to it on the lighter side...

There was this little guy sitting inside a bar, just looking at his drink. After he didn't move for a half-an-hour, this big trouble-making truck driver stepped up right next to him, took the drink from the guy, and just drank it all down. The poor man started crying. The truck driver turned and said: "Come on man, I was just joking. Here, I'll buy you another drink. I just can't stand to see aman crying. "No, it's not that." the man replied, Today is the worst day of my life. First, I overslept and was late for an important meeting. My boss became outraged and then fired me.When I left the building to my car, I found out that it was stolen. The police said they could do nothing. I then got a cab to return home, and after I paid the cab driver and the cab had gone, I found that I left my whole wallet in the cab. I got home only to find my wife was in bed with the gardener. "The man was really sobbing now, "I left home depressed and came to this bar. And now, just when I was thinking about putting an end to my life, YOU show up and drink my poison ..."

Let me argue with the statement of luck..

The process of immigration to Canada to me was a combination of:

1. My job being in demand, i.e. have the right NOC at the time (destiny)
2. Prepare everything myself and invest hours of sorting, copying, confirming, checking, re reading (hard work)
3. Show lots of patience (self discipline)
4. Have enough money (ability to stick to a budget for years)
5. Supply necessary documents when requested (time management)
6. Being healthy (lifestyle choice)
7. Believe in yourself (faith)

So, there was not a lot of luck involved..

My Friend, you journey started with luck :D. "Right NOC at the time," otherwise there are people who applied on 27th feb 2008 and got their files back this NOC thing. This is mere luck....some probably waited 6-7 years and then got their files back. So conclusion, it first starts with luck, everything else follows.

I want to add my two cents to this interesting dialogue, not from canadian immigration but from US immigration point of view. US has a diversity visa lottery system (I would assume that most are familiar with it here!). SO, if one wins the dv lottery (which I don't have to argue that is based merely on one's luck), one can become a US permanent resident in less than a year!

One the other hand, a hard-working and skilled individual who is sponsored for the green card has to wait for years and years to finally get it!

So, one more vote for luck!

Good one....

I also have a story here.... One of my friends applied for canadaian visa before feb 2008, he did all the hard work and submitted his application...after few weeks he got his application back from VO New Delhi stating that he forgot to do signature on one of the docs and so he need to sign it and send it back to VO...and after a few days he received the letter with all the original docs back stating that since the rules have changed post Feb 2008 his application is not approved...
