I'm planning on living in Canada while my PR application processes. Can I get prescription meds paid for by my current private health insurance company (an American company) through a drug store in Ontario? It is a self-paid health plan (I'm self-employed).

Thanks

I'm pretty sure you would need to call your health insurance company since each one has different rules. They'd be the one paying it. I'm pretty sure mine (i'm from US) doesn't cover prescriptions abroad.

Mine paid for them but it was a lot of paperwork. First an Ontario pharmacy won't fill a US prescription, you need a Ontario prescription. I took my US meds to a walk in clinic paid the fee to see a dr and he wrote me a Canada script for my meds. Took the new prescription to the pharmacy here and paid cash to fill them. Then submitted receipts to my US insurance by mail and got reimbursed. It was a hassle but worked and saved me money, check with your insurance and see what the policy is, I had Blue Cross Blue Shield.
