Some landlords rent their place to 1st time immigrants, international students, workers etc. but is not always the case. Not everyone have the same requirement. How much rent and space are you looking for?
Sometimes they do.. if landlords are from you community , he/she will understand .
Otherwise they do not give it to 1st time immigrants. because they can not check our credit.

It is best for you guys to check in kijji.ca before one month of landing date.

Basement is also good initially.

Thanks for advice.

But if land direct Toronto by PIA and then arrange another flight, Will landing in Toronto will be considered as my port of landing? and would I have complete my Immigration process in Toronto OR it will be considered as a Transit/Connecting flight?
if you flight have connection than you can do port of landing in Calgary or Edmonton.

if you have no connection and you are booking local flight than you need to do landing at toronto.

I personally advise to do port of landing in Calgary or Edmonton as they are nice and do not ask any question of money or anything.

Hi walid,

It is always difficult to settle down in new country/city even you have friends and relatives. Still Its good to have friend or relatives. Basement is cheaper than apartment in calgary. You can try for basement for sometime. you can find basement/apartment on kijji.ca.

You have two kids so first thing is to register for a health card once you land in calgary. To register for a health card you need address proof.

1. open a bank account
2 once you get bank statement go to nearest registry and apply for a health card
3. Go to service canada calgary and apply for a SIN number for your family.
4. Take the book from the registry for driving licence exam. Book is free and you can get from nearest
registry
5. PR card will come automatically within 8 weeks.
6. apply for child benefit and GST benefit. you can get form from service canada for child benefit. Fill the
form and send it to cover address. they will reply you within 80 days. They will send you cheque/Deposit
in your account

- This are some of basic things you need to do in your first month. Also start preparing for written exam for
driving. Its easy , computer based , 30 question exam. you need to answer 25 question right to passed the
exam. you can also download PDF copy from the internet.

- Bring you Indian licence with you. if you have Indian driving experience , you do not need to wait for one
year to challenge practical exam.

Currently Alberta market is getting slow down because of Oil price but still is much batter than Toronto.

Let me know for any question.
Nice info :D

Can you brief on GST benefits.

Payments are determined by family income and number of children in a family. The lower the family income, the higher the child benefit.

Pls refer the following link for more info on child benefits

We dont need to apply for temporary health insurance coverage as new immigrants are covered in government funded health care insurance plan from day 1 in Alberta.

You can open a bank account in TD and get a bank statement from them the next day of opening the account which shows your address as this will serve as address proof for your application for health coverage.

Then you have to visit an authorised registry agent office in Calgary, get application form from them (the application form can also be downloaded from the website of Alberta health beforehand), fill it and submit it with your bank statement. The agent will also have a look at your original passport and copr and make entry in system.

The list of authorised registry agent office in Calgary is in the following link:
http://programs.alberta.ca/Contacts/Map.aspx?id=9745&city=Calgary

You will get the health card mailed at your provided address in 7 days after applying.

Hi rawdah,
Thanks for your prompt response which clears the whole issue for me in details.

As regard to the SIN card, I read in one of the thread that these days we apply for the SIN card during landing process at the airport. Is it correct?
I know you are in your early stage of settling there in Calgary but still you are sparing your valuable time for active contributions to this forum, I am really thankful to you for that and feel obliged.

Regards
b_lalij

There was no option to apply for SIN at the Calgary airport when I landed.

Next day after landing I went to Service Canada office in harry hays building in downtown Calgary and applied for my SIN and got SIN letter on the spot.

Hello Everyone,

we landed on sept 17 and left calgary back to the middle east on oct 6. as we all know its quite difficult at the moment to get a job in calgary because of the fall in oil price. My questions and fears:

are we at risk of loosing our resident if we dont move asap?

how long can we stay away from canada and it becomes a concern?

how often do we need to travel to canada to still be on the right track?

what circumsatnces will lead to refusal to renew the resident permit if need be?

please i need more explanations on this from everyone please. :( :( :( :(

To meet residency obligations, you must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) in every 5-year period.
This means that you can spend a total of up to 3 years outside of Canada during a 5-year period.
