Thanks Rawdah for the useful Info...

You are welcome.

Dear Rawdah / Seniors,

I would like to thank you for the great support.

Im planning to migrate (me, spouse and two kids) and land in Calgary.

I dont have relatives nor friends. I know it would be better if I have but what to do this is my situation.

I dont have any problem to be independant as I used to this during my whole life.

However, do u think it would be really so hard for a new immigrant to start alone?

By the way, with this forum, I feel that I'm in safe hands specially with you guys.

Thanks in advance!

for one stop flight, check through PIA, they are providing interconnect through Toronto. Till toronto, PIA Flyt, onwards flight either on West Jet or on Air Canada...

You can check through KLM too, if you want to give landing directly in Alberta Province...

Thanks for advice.

But if land direct Toronto by PIA and then arrange another flight, Will landing in Toronto will be considered as my port of landing? and would I have complete my Immigration process in Toronto OR it will be considered as a Transit/Connecting flight?

use skyscanner... I checked one - http://www.skyscanner.co.in/transport/flights/lhe/yeg/150817/airfares-from-lahore-to-edmonton-international-in-august-2015.html?rtn=0&usrplace=IN&adults=2&children=1&infants=0&_ga=1.258342410.1456222947.1420707566

To my best knowledge, if you land in Toronto then it will be your port of landing. Seniors may comment on this and confirm...

Yes landing will be done in first port of entry to Canada, Toronto.

Hi rawdah,

First of all, thank you for creating this thread and giving advises and guidance to future Calgarians..

Glad to have found this thread. Me & my family are planning to land and settle in Calgary. We are still in the initial stages of our application. We are praying and hoping we will have our PR Visa by mid of this year and have plans on landing hopefully in September. We don't have family or friends there. It will be a start from scratch for us, as i believe most 1st time immigrants do.

I have 2kids (girls). At this early, i am already looking and researching for where to enroll them and such. But they still starting kindergarten. Thankful that public schools are free. And of course, the employment for myself. Starting as well to researched and hopefully in due time will find a suitable job to make ends meet and still can save some with little extras on the side.. ;D

The main concern we have by the time, is the Accommodation. Iv'e been looking at kijiji.ca - Calgary in particular. Do landlords, really rent their place to 1st time immigrants? I mean, we can only communicate with them through email that we are interested to rent their apartment and would hope we can close the deal so when the landing date comes, we can directly have our place to stay. Can enlighten me on this point. Really would like to have advices on this matter.

Thanks again and appreciate your time in replying. :) ;)

Dear Friends,

Let's make this a common platform for all who are going to settle in Calgary and also those who have already landed / settled in Calgary.

Please share all the useful info here related to settlement, housing, health care, transportation, banking, child care / schooling, community centres, education, careers, jobs, fairs, driving license, landing experience etc and let's help each other and Network.

All the best.

Good suggestion rawdah. Lets get it going!

Some landlords rent their place to 1st time immigrants, international students, workers etc. but is not always the case. Not everyone have the same requirement. How much rent and space are you looking for?

Hi walid,

It is always difficult to settle down in new country/city even you have friends and relatives. Still Its good to have friend or relatives. Basement is cheaper than apartment in calgary. You can try for basement for sometime. you can find basement/apartment on kijji.ca.

You have two kids so first thing is to register for a health card once you land in calgary. To register for a health card you need address proof.

1. open a bank account
2 once you get bank statement go to nearest registry and apply for a health card
3. Go to service canada calgary and apply for a SIN number for your family.
4. Take the book from the registry for driving licence exam. Book is free and you can get from nearest
registry
5. PR card will come automatically within 8 weeks.
6. apply for child benefit and GST benefit. you can get form from service canada for child benefit. Fill the
form and send it to cover address. they will reply you within 80 days. They will send you cheque/Deposit
in your account

- This are some of basic things you need to do in your first month. Also start preparing for written exam for
driving. Its easy , computer based , 30 question exam. you need to answer 25 question right to passed the
exam. you can also download PDF copy from the internet.

- Bring you Indian licence with you. if you have Indian driving experience , you do not need to wait for one
year to challenge practical exam.

Currently Alberta market is getting slow down because of Oil price but still is much batter than Toronto.

Let me know for any question.
