My husband told him that I volunteered at his job without getting paid. He thought being honest would help the case.

Yes unfortunately, volunteering is something that no countries would allow tourists/visitors to do....because for them it's not only a matter of the visitors "taking money away from their own citizens", but "taking *opportunities* (paid or not) from their own citizens"......and if I remember correctly, in one of the Canada Border Security episodes, even an officer told a British guy (who was visiting his Canadian gf) that helping around at her house (even if unpaid) (such as painting walls, doing chores, etc) wasn't allowed O.o

You can watch the UK one and Australia's on youtube.

Canada's was also on YouTube, but was eventually removed..... =(. Any idea why?

I love it too ..On one of our explanations of why my husband is still in the U.k was " my wife watches Boarder Security and is terrified that i am going to be denied entry " so i will wait then sell my assets to move to Canada.

I on the other hand has dual citizenship and i get pulled into secondary more often when i travel than any one else i know . My sister says she'snot travelling with me lol ...

Say what... O.o that is INSANE. You're helping your spouse... it's basically like a chore then.. not volunteering. Friggin' ridiculous. -_-
I helped my husband paint his apartment. Am I taking away opportunities for someone? hahah He wouldn't have painted it if I hadn't helped since it's not too big of a deal to him but since I was willing to help, he was more willing to want to paint it.
I need to see that episode.

Nope you can't do anything ..My husband put in a new staircase we laughed all the whole day ,he teased me about not doing anything and being a man of leisure

Jeez, that's pretty strict. In my case, the officer was convinced that I was getting paid to do it. Kept repeating it and telling me that I was lying. I'm not about to sit there an argue with a man who was clearly looking for a shouting match and probably a reason to lock me up, so I just accepted the decision. But I've learned my lesson. Never again!

I saw that episode. It wasn't so simple as that... he had worked the previous year in a job similar to what he would be helping his girlfriend and her family with. Also, it didn't help that when they called his girlfriend, they asked what he would be doing here and she said he would be helping with painting. Normally, painting is something you would get pay for, so having him do it for his girlfriend's family is considered as "displacing Canadian citizens or PRs" in the job market.

Volunteering is allowed for visitors but only for tasks that would normally not be paid. e.g. being an ambassador or greeter at the hospital, serving meals at food shelter or in hospital. But being a "volunteer teacher" at a high school is not acceptable because it's a job people normally get paid for.

Did any one see the one with the Buskers , he was able to busk on the streets with out a work permit .Yes he had been working the following year ,but they still said he wasn't able to even wash dishes .Who would have thought though that he couldn't help build a wall in his girlfriends house .

Ok, see, this makes more sense. If I'm visiting and staying at my husband's household, I'm not going to just sit around like a lazy blob. I'm going to do dishes, and clean the bathroom (it's not like he'd hire a maid...lmao).
My husband and I also "volunteer" at our local animal shelter. It's clearly volunteering as we just come in and play with cats. They don't pay anyone to do that. I'm pretty sure countries allow people to volunteer while visiting as it's not taking anything away from citizens. There's ALWAYS need for more volunteers.

it's because they have already bought the place they end up with, and have already moved in or are in the process of doing so. someone i used to work for was a realtor on that show with her clients. it's completely staged!
