Maybe they realized they're behind on some bills and they wanna catch up?
I know it's probably not the reason but I'm "Mister Positive"...
They're discussing S-5.
C-6 COULD be next. COULD.
I like your stream of thoughts Mr. Positive! :D Guess you're right, they seem to be pushing things along today. Another reason to be proud of being in Canada. :) No matter what we say, we tend to always look down upon the efforts by senators (when things don't go our way) but we end up ignoring many other things.

it took bill c2 a year to be approved , only seven sessions for third reading...so i wouldn't hope much for bill c6 as of what's left of 2016 ..

End of 2016 is a long stretch! As Monalisa said July'17 looks more realistic.

I arrived in Canada in 2008 as an International Student and did my entire undergraduate degree here and in 2011 when I graduated I changed to a post-grad work permit, I immediately got a job and on January 2014 I got my permanent residency (my application for PR was affected by several strikes and issues at the time). In 2015 I was all ready to apply for Citizenship on January 2016 until the bill was passed which changed my application date to January 2018

It's gonna take me 10 years to apply for Citizenship, meanwhile there are several stories of people who became citizens a lot faster and often through exploiting the system (e.g.: arranged marriages). I've worked really hard since I entered Canada first as a Student and now as a worker in the highly important tech sector, I already have a house here and a spouse. The government really doesn't seem to want me to stay here. I've gotten many opportunities to go work in California and other places in the US... I wonder if backward laws is why Canada is so behind in the tech sector and why we lose so many people in this field to the US.
we are in same page for delay 2 years very painful, even if this government do not help us to apply earlier, never ever give vote to Conservative who they are living in gunboat century

with this speed we should be even worried about 2017!
It's at the point now where I almost hope it doesn't pass until late 2017. I came here in 2010 as a worker, landed in June 2013, and could have applied in July/August 2015. I would have been a citizen already if they hadn't changed in mid-stream.

Now I'm eligible in August 2017, so may as well stick it out until then, and hope that the restoration of pre-PR time and the 3/5 doesn't go into effect until after my app starts processing. That way there is no horrible backlog to deal with. And then I can finally renounce my US citizenship.

just a question on the side , WHY DO YOU WANT TO RENOUNCE USA CITIZENSHIP . I always regret i missed a past change that would have let me get usa citizenship ! this is the first time i hear somone who wants to renounce it !!!!!!!

Thank you Marcher for starting this thread, and to the many pertinent commentators (MarceauBletard etc). My own thread was hijacked by irrelevant comments, and probably removed for that reason.

C-6 is on the Order Paper for today's Senate sitting as well. I guess it may well be on the Order Paper on each and every day for the daily mandatory sittings of the Senate till the 23rd.

I look forward to C-6 becoming the law, WHENEVER. Eliminating the current two-tiered citizenship, and vagueness of the Intent to Reside Clause is critical. You may have reason to thank the liberals many years in the future for getting rid of C-24.

Trudeau is taking the high ethical road in passing his government's bills in a very democratic manner, rather than steamrolling them like Harper did. My sympathies, of course, for the many who it impacts more severely and who need it ASAP, but please also consider that a truer democracy often makes processes far slower.

In short, chill and relax people. As much as you can and your situation allows.

And do not forget the basic facts. The Conservatives tabled C-24 (and very effectively bulldozed it into law quickly), while the Liberals tabled C-6 (and are progressing on making it into law steadily, but far more slowly).

Cheers,
Rmorgan
