Hi

This is a bit of misinformation. Unless in special cases, all senators can speak for or against any bill. And no they do not announce we are filibustering. They just register their names to speak. There are 42 cons and in theory each can delay a week or so. So, unless there is an urgency they can postpone it for 42 weeks. Having a liberal or an independent in the list of speakers, it just adds to the delay. So best action by libs and independent senators is to just have con sens their 10 minutes of fame. It will pass in 42 weeks or sooner if cons stops being cons which I doubt so.
I agree, that is one approach to follow, sadly the very long long one. The other approach is the Lib Senators can bring back the discussion onto the table, identify the issues that could be amended, and come up with amendments that may help push this bill faster. It takes more effort and compromise, but it would cut down the waiting time; definitely not 42 weeks. By the way, recently Con senators adjourned the bill and took longer than a week to address it. So based on this pace it could hang in limbo for another year or so. Funny how the Senate which is composed of mature experienced elders resembles a toddlers' playground! At least the toddlers have an excuse for behaving the way they do :)

Actually there is already one amendment that is discussed and will be adopted by committee and McCallum already agreed with that amendment. What cons want is the clause for two class citizenship and I will never vote or support libs if they compromise on that one.

Which clause is that?

So it seems by the post by Ottawahd that the Libs are between the devil and deep blue sea. If they wait and wait and allow the Cons to carry on, most current PR's ( like me) who will most probably vote liberal will not be eligible to vote and they will lose a sizeable immigrant vote at next election. But if they give in to the Cons on the two tiered citizenship ( which is ridiculous in a democratic system), they will lose established liberals?? no middle ground on this one...but I still believe that the Libs in the Senate should be more forceful

That is true to some point. Let's not forget that as a group of individuals directly affected by C-24, we are a very small group that the Libs does not care about. We won't win them or lose them elections. Second, we care so much about C-6 now because of its direct impact, years down the line we will forget about it. Other immigrants who are already citizens do not care about C-6 as much, at least not the 4/6 rule.

Now the issue will be with the second class citizenship; that may impact anyone with dual nationalities. In that case, the group is significant; but guess what? The policy all parties use is let cross that bridge when we get there. This is something they can ignore now but once the elections approach, come up with some nice slogan to pretend they are against it, a Canadian is a Canadian is Canadian ..etc.

I personally do not think this subject is what most dual citizens will base their choices on. For the majority, they might not care about it at all as they'll say well I am not planning on committing any illegal violations, and I plan to live in Canada for good; and should I move to work abroad, it will be in a safe nation where I will never need support or help from the government of Canada.

Again, it's Libs are delaying and mess up the bill, there is nothing to do with Cons, it's Libs give much opportunities to Cons to speak to show how "Open" and "Democratic" they are, not like Cons who were "Dictatorate" and passed C-24 in 3 days.

It's the Senate speaker (who is Lib senator) who moves the motion to pass the reading. He is the boss of the Senate. If He moves the motion and the Independent senators support the Libs, certainly the motion would be passed. So far he has not attempted any motion to pass the reading, just allows endless senators speak the same phases again and again.

Not accurate. Here is the time table:

Action Date Days from previous Spoken by: Adjourned by:
First Reading 6/17/2016 - Omidvar Eaton
Chamber Sitting: 56 9/27/2016 102 Eaton Jaffar
Chamber Sitting: 65 10/25/2016 28 Jaffar Pratte
Chamber Sitting: 67 10/27/2016 2 Pratte Ringuette
Chamber Sitting: 76 11/24/2016 28 Ringuette Ngo
Chamber Sitting: 77 11/28/2016 4 Ngo Frum
Chamber Sitting: 85 12/8/2016 10 Frum Lang
Chamber Sitting: * Lang *
Total as of: 1/0/1900 174 - -

Sen. Jafar and Se. Ringuette held the discussion for 28 days each!!; this adds to the delay

In fact he tried once. This is not the point however.... the major point is: why the pro-C-6 Senators agree to adjournment motion!!!???

Thats the main issue, because i had met many citizens who they still hold their citizenship of origins since 200 years.
As mention we are skilled immigrants most of us speak 3 languages at leas, language rules doesnt effect us, but we have to care about adult people who cant easily learn english or french.

so bill c6 is important for everyone, just few amendments are required even 3/5 is important for us, no backlogs dont worry about it, last 4 years they didnt take much applications compared to few years back, like quebec they accept 5000 applications per year.

actually immigration enhance the economy, international students too, they need c6 to consider days before pr and 3/5 too important, else students will go to australia/new zealand/europe etc

canada is loosing these talents and international student, every family they rent house ,car, cell phone internet connection etc etc

our kids born in this county are canadians, they dont care about our home country. we are the parents of furture canadian,
gouvernment should do everything for us, to support us etc

A lot of debating today on this forum today...
I just come here to know if it's been skipped again or not ;D
Although I'd love the answer to this: "the major point is: why the pro-C-6 Senators agree to adjournment motion!!!???"
You're my soul spirit, spiritsoul! :D

Ok, they're discussing C-29 right now. Next is S-5 then C-6.

Hi
Your answer is simple. It is just a matter of courtesy to actually ask and agree to adjournment.
The last time that was not done was the last sitting of senate during Harper. They rushed an anti union bill in to law without actually giving time to than 20 lib senators to oppose it.

I think she meant their ancestors moved here 200 years ago, yet they are still maintaining their second nationality until this generation.
