Beirut FAM applicants forwarded to CPP-Ottawa

I happen to ask my accountant the same exact question las week. No he does not! you are not considered common-law partner under the canadian law unless both of you have a Canadian SIN number.

we thought so..but i had read somewhere on this forum i don't remember where or i would have quoted it, that if he applies as single he would be committing tax fraud!

I did not file yet, I asked my accountant last week about it, he said if my wife does not have PR status and living with me I would apply as single. He is a very very good accountant, but he might be wrong... I'm sure if you google it you will find some more answers

Hello guys,

I just called Canada Revenue Agency yesterday and they said you file as "married" and you leave the SIN blank for your spouse and put in how much he makes over at his country and Lebanon doesn't have a tax treaty with Canada so for that question it is "No".

I need your opinion on this. My husband and I want to email Beirut visa office and inquire about the status of his application. What do you guys think? Should he email them or should I email?

I have emailed CPP ottawa back in September before we had the transfer but never got a reply.

Most probably they wont answer, as it did not pass the published processing times

My husband will be filing for his taxes soon, should he include me even though i am not living in Canada? or apply as single? did you guys do that?
his account said not to mention me since i don't live in canada but she is not sure!

Hi Lebcan, I would advise that your husband mark it as married, and there is an option that you can tick to specify that you are not living with him/do not have a SIN. The reason I would go with that (which is what I did with my wife), is that he already sent in his salary and tax info when he got your sponsorship sponsorship approval, and since it's a "Spousal" sponsorship, he's automatically married . So if a tax agent is being incredibly diligent, he/she can cross referenced it with that date in mind. Although I don't believe this omission will cause any problems, and will most likely be overlooked, for consistency purposes, I think it's a good idea to include it. If he is worried about Canada taxing worldly income, you neither worked in Canada nor are you a Canadian PR/Citizen yet, and hence that should be a moot point. (my 2 cents)

As for my updates, I got my first set of notes (March 13th), looks like Criminality and Security have not yet been started. Medical has passed. It appears that they are recommending an interview (18 months after we met, we were married is not enough I guess ...) so that should be fun

It says on the notes that you require an interview. Since we have the same sponsorship approval date, could you please tell me if you have an eligibility due date on your notes and what that is. I just ordered my 3rd set of notes on March 14, need to wait 3 weeks to get them.

If they will be interviewing you, they might also interview my husband as well.

There are two entries where I can find Eligibility, first one was under the ASSESSMENTS Section (but no actual date), here's the exact wording for the fields that had info in them:
Eligibility: In Progress
Security: Not Started
Criminality: Not Started
Medical: Passed - Expired

Second one is the ELIGIBILITY ASSESSMENT Section itself:
Eligibility Assessment: 1
Created Date: 2013/03/14
Updated: 2014/02/06
Status: Recommend Interview (in the notes towards the end of the file, they specify why "Relationship Length")
Status Date: 2014/02/06
Due Date: 2014/03/14 (That date has passed, but we have heard nothing so far, maybe your notes will have the updated dates)

In the notes, they mention that because my wife has lived in another country (other than Lebanon) for more than 6 months "File to be reviewed by an officer prior to convoking for an Interview" (2014/02/06)

So it specifically mentions and recommends an interview, hopefully if your notes don't specifically mention that, then it means you're cleared to proceed to passport request I wish they would interview me instead of my wife (the principal applicant), she gets very nervous during any kind of formal interview, but I would have had a pleasure talking to them myself!

Hopefully with a 3/14 due date, we'll both be hearing something soon, and that you'll get your passport request even sooner than the status update notes

Thanks for the explanation. That's really interesting that 18 months relationship is not enough. Maybe that's too long I think. I met my husband 10 months before I got married. I knew a little before but it wasn't a relationship. We are from the same town, have friends in common etc...

I think when they wanna interview someone they just make up a reason.

I filed last year and this year as married and from an accounting educated person, I suggest you file married. It won't make a difference on your taxes.

Canadian_leb, I emailed Beirut in February, at about 11:00 pm our time which would be 8:00 am Beirut time. I had a response within an hour!
