Hi everyone,
So as some of you may have known, I got approved for BC PNP in late December. So I applied for a work permit online shortly after. However, the lawyer at my company told me that I can flagpole and get my work permit a lot faster, like immediately.
Even though I applied online, it was worth the try so I traveled to Seattle and drove to the Canadian border last weekend. I didn't exactly do what they call "flagpoling", I just drove straight up to the officer and told her I was applying for a work permit. She asked me a few questions and sent me to the office inside. I waited for half and hour at the line and finally got to talk to a border officer. I told her about my situation and she processed my application right there. I waited for another half an hour for her to put in the information and granted me a work permit right after. Since I was approved for PNP, she granted me a work permit for 2 years instead of 1 year so I would have enough time to apply for PR. So the news is, I've got my work permit for 2 years on Friday. While the online application process might take up to 2-4 months, I got it right away at the Canadian Border. Since CIC and Canadian Border Services Agency are two different entity, I had to pay the $150 application fee again and now have to try to get the $150 I paid the CIC back. I'm not sure if it will work. Nonetheless, this took a shitload of weight off my shoulder. I am turning the resignation notice to my current employer today and will be moving to Vancouver in a couple weeks.
Some of you might have known about this already but I just want to share my experience. I didn't know about this when I applied online. The risk with this "flagpoling" thing is that they might not approve my work permit and I will have to go back and wait for the decision on my online application. A refusal for work permit at the border will not affect the decision for applications made to the CIC. But since we are approved for BC PNP, I think it is a lot easier compare to those with LMOs. Best of luck guys, and thank you for your help all along!!!
