Yeah, I think the 37 day time is just wrong and they're really processing applications around 45 days. I'm just frustrated since the SA is holding up the rest of my application and I know I should be getting it soon (I'm not a patient person).

I'll stay up late tonight with my husband and have him call at 5:30am PST. I'll let you guys know if I find out anything.

im not a patient person either! and if you are as impatient as me and dont want to listen to the machine speak for the first 7 minutes of the call just to get a representative then after dialing the number let the machine speak for a bit press 2>1>1>0.. each time you press the number let them speak for like 10 secs then press the other number LOL
hope that made sense

That made sense. I'll definitely do that. I have phone anxiety so if there's one thing I really hate is having to talk on the phone to anyone, especially with something like this. My husband is the same way so it'll be interesting, lol.

Yeah, and who knows, maybe we'll wake up to a batch of SA emails with ours in it!

Hello Everyone!

I came across this forum looking for answers and I'm hoping someone can help!

I am a US citizen and my husband is a Canadian citizen. We legally got married a month ago and are about to begin the sponsorship application. Would anyone think it's necessary to apply for the sponsorship through a lawyer or did everyone submit the paperwork and applications on their own?? I began all the paperwork like copies of phone calls, texts, messages, pictures, medical and background check but would it be necessary to spend all the money to get a lawyer? Would it make a difference at all? Also, did anyone receive any replies about their application? What is the average wait time???

I am very anxious about this whole process because we thought it was a simple move. We were not expecting to wait to complete forms and such

Unless you have serious issues like criminality, going through a lawyer or consultant is a waste of money, especially since you're American. The forms are fairly straightforward to fill out and this forum is a great tool for answering questions. Most Americans are processed through Ottawa and are taking roughly 2-5 months right now (that office has recently sped up).

Apply for the FBI background check now. American citizens (and permanent residents) are now allowed to use 3rd party FBI approved channelers again.

I'm also from the US and I applied on April 6th. I'm currently waiting for sponsorship approval, which should come any day now.

Please don't post the same exact question on multiple threads (it's considered rude). I responded to all of your posts.

Okay! Thank you so much! That makes sense. We wanted to get everything right and thought it would be best to go through a lawyer but it seems like a waste of time and lots of money!!

I just sent in my fingerprints for FBI clearance 2 weeks ago. Waiting back on that which supposedly takes 15 weeks??!!

Also, what do you mean by the Ottawa office taking 2-5 months? Is that to hear back if we are missing any parts of the application? Or for approval?

Good luck to you! Did you apply April 6 of this year??

So Sorry for the repeated messages! Very new to this

Hello everyone,

just a quick question, i was preparing to file for spousal immigration, we do not have any dependent, do i still have to fill the form Additional Dependants/Declaration Or not.

Also the photographs do i have to write the names of the individuals on the back for the photographs I am attaching with my file.

Thanks.

Forget about the check from the FBI. It took mine 18 weeks and that was when 3rd party channelers weren't allowed. Go ahead and apply for a check from a channeler now if you can.

2-5 months is the total time it's taking most Americans to be processed right now. Sponsorship approval is the first part. This happens in Mississauga (for everyone) and takes anywhere from 30-60 days. Then it's forwarded to Ottawa for the principal applicant's portion (you). Quite a few people who have been processed through the Ottawa visa office have had a final decision made on their application within weeks of sponsorship approval. However, applications used to take 4-8 months total through this office. The very fast processing time is a recent change.

Yes, April 6th of this year. Thank you. I'm impatiently awaiting sponsorship approval right now.

It's alright ;D.

Unfortunately, it's not a simple process for Americans to move to Canada. Americans are expected to go through the same immigration channels as everyone else. It is generally an easier process for Americans though.

If you do not have any dependents, you won't need the "Additional Dependents/Declaration" form.

The photographs to help prove your relationship? You can do that if you want. I did that for most of the pictures I printed out.

Wow!! 2-5 months?? So why does the CIC website state that outbound spouse sponsorship processing time will take up to 17 months??

Did you submit your application after your received the FBI clearance? Or is it okay to send the entire application first without the clearance?

What do you mean by a 3rd party channeler??? From as far as I know and read upon- I completed my fingerprints here in US and sent them to the FBI office here and I'm waiting on a clearance letter that I am supposed to send to the office in Canada. I hope that part was right! How does a channeler play into this?

So once you get your approval notice- are you allowed to move right away?

The 17 months only means that 80% of applications are processed in 17 months or less. In most circumstances, the processing times listed on the website are very inaccurate.

I submitted it with the application, but that was my choice. It's fine to send the application without the FBI check. Just write a letter to include with your application saying that you will forward it when you have it and explain the long processing times. A lot of Americans do this.

Directly from the FBI: https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/identity-history-summary-checks "Option 2: Submit your request to an FBI-approved Channeler, which is a private business that has contracted with the FBI to submit your request on your behalf. Contact each Channeler for costs, processing times, and availability in your area." From the CIC: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/security/police-cert/north-america/united-states.asp

For about a year, the CIC didn't allow people to use reports from those contracted 3rd party channelers. Now, they're allowed again and depending on which channeler and what you pay you can get your request the same day, compared to the 13+ weeks from the FBI.

Yes. Once your application is approved you will get a COPR (Confirmation of Permanent Residence) in the mail and then you have to go to the border to land

If time is of the essence (and really, who is NOT for on this forum? haha) I highly recommend Fieldprint as a channeler. I had my FBI clearance back within 10 minutes. It's only $50.

makes you wonder what takes the FBI so long when doing it themselves. Weird.
