Hi , I got my kit back in Jan and yesterday I noticed that though they had sent mine back due to the cap having been reached, they have actually opened my kit analyzed all the papers, punched it and put tick marks etc. Is it the same case with others whose kits have been returned?
My kit reached on the 28th of Oct and the last app considered this year was for the 27th oct in 1122 category.

OK, so in Toronto/Suburbs, for rent it's about 900CAD and the same for Vancouver/Suburbs :). I guess the 2000CAD should work in both places then.

But is there a difference in the pay-scale as the minimum wages are different for both cities?

Thanks,

Indira Prabhakaran.
Canada is not even listed among the top 50 places with high cost of living in the world.

Living in London, I can appreciate the difference.

Wayne,

What suburbs of Vancouver do you think are good for settling? Vancouver is my first choice and Calgary (just for the jobs) is second.

Thanks,
Rod

OK :) I think for family of 2 it is much cheaper. On the suburbs of Vancouver can get an apartment with 2 bedrooms (so enough for a guest room) for $600 to $800 per month easily enough.

You sure want to start off expensive when you land in Canada.

100 for mobile? 1000-1200 rent? Internet 50? 600-800 food?

Having spent some time in Canada last year, let me assure you that you can find things much cheaper. Just need to find out from people who know.

Your estimates will work better for a family of four.
Hi advance...i know i am bit on higher side,But its wise to plan unforeseen factors beforehand..these are close estimates....lets plan extravagent live miser...

To start miserly is a good thing at times.

If you start small then move up you will be praised. Even if you fall, you are already on the ground so it won't hurt.

On the other hand, if you start big and you fall, great will that fall be.

Hi Indira,

Oh god no!. It won't definetely cost you $ 800 if you are cooking indian style food. I would say 200 - 300 per person with all five days of meat food. Which is what I am paying now a days but I am 4 hours from toronto and here groceries are little costlier than toronto. But definetely if you are cooking then it would be around 500 for 2 member and for a kid it is highly based what you feed him.

For rent in toronto, my friends live there it is costing them 1100 for 2 bedroom apartment. I know you can get $700 - $800 for a decent 1 bedroom apartment in a decent location as a start.
Hope this helps!
Thanks,
Pradeep
Pradeep,

Thanks so much :) So, yes, i will cook ;)

So, we are looking at

Item Vancouver: Toronto
Rent - 1 bedroom 800 800
Food - Indian cooking for 2 adults and a kid 600 500
Travel - Public Transportation for 2A & 1 K --- 250
Phone * 2 and Internet --- 100
Daycare/after school day care --- ---

It would be great if someone can provide inputs on the blanks above. I welcome people to edit the above table and bring us to a better picture.

Apart from this, how much do we spend on education, healthcare, miscellaneous stuff etc., during the initial days? I know the schools and health care is kinda free, but I'm sure there must be some minimal costs involved?

How about having a car in both cities?

Thanks,

Indira Prabhakaran.

Daycare cost depends on where you live. Ontario has one of the most expensive but the government gives subsidies if you qualify.

I love Indian food - if you move to Vancouver can I come round your house for tea some time? :)

Seriously though home-cooked food is going to be cheaper and healthier than eating our or junk microwave food anyway.

I can't imagine a food bill for the month coming to $800 even for a family of 4. That's like £600 per month, which is insane! In the UK we spend maybe £150 to £200 per month on food (admittedly that is just 2 of us) so that's like $225 to $300 in CAD.

Indira,

For driving. My recommendation. Get a letter from your local RTO saying your license # and year of experience and also a attested copy of your license to prove it is original.

If you show this letter to local lisencing office they will let you take G road test licese(which is the latest you can go)(and also you need to have more than 2 year experience) but if you dont have the letter some ministry office will accept your indian driving licese and some don't. So letter is important.

You can get a decent used car for around $10000, which will easily go for few years.

Insurance is highly based on your age , experience and car model and year. In this case you dont have experience so you wil probably looking around $250 for insurance and Fuel atleat $100. So if you want a car it will atleast cost you 350 for a month but you will have the comfort as you have a small kid.

Thanks,

Pradeep

Hey folks,

My research on cost of living in Toronto is something as below:-

Monthly Rent
$850 to $1100 for a one or two bedroom apartment

Transportation
$90 to $180 This amount is for public transportation for the wife or the person who doesn't
drive, and it depends on where you go, one city or GTA.

Gas (Fuel)
$200 to $300 Depends on your usage

Home Parking
$40 to $50 Outdoor parking is cheaper

Other Parking
$10 to $30 You some time need to park in a paid parking inside the city

Car Insurance
$183 to $300 Depends on the coverage and the insurance company

Grocery
$350 to $500 Depends on the luxury level you want

Household
$20 to $50 Barber, Bank Fees ...etc

Utilities
$145 to $180 this is two Mobile phones (with couples plan, which means unlimited free calls between
the couples), 1 Mbps Internet, and Home Phone. All from Rogers for $145 monthly.
You can add a cableTV for like $30 or $40

Clothing
$50 to $70 That's $600 to $840 per year, it's enough for winter and summer clothes (twice a
year), but again it depends on what you want to buy and from where

Entertainment
$100 to $200 Restaurants, Picnic, Hanging out ...etc. average restaurant cost for a family of three
is $50 to $75 (if it's a fancy restaurant)

Laundry
$40 to $50

Total Living Cost

$2088 to $3010
Not including the optional expenses below

Pre-School/Day care
$600 to $800
If you want to put your kid in a pre-school or a daycare you would be paying this amount

Electricity & Water
$80 to $150
This is most likely to be included with your rent

Wayne, come on, you say you love Indian food and why would you settle down for a tea?

You and your wify are invited for repeated Indian dinners at our place, wherever we are in Canada :)

Disclaimer: I'm not a great cook, but i can cook some awesome dinners :p :p
