Are there any possibilities for international PhDs to work legally before graduation?

Can we apply for a work permit?

I posed this question since I will be on job market this year.

I am not sure if we can legally work before granted degrees?

Of course we can, Just apply for a work permit online. You can work 20 hours week without any problems. Takes about 3 weeks for you to get the permit.

Thanks for answering my question. What if we want to work full-time before graduation? ???

I know a lot of PhDs are just funded for first four years. That means for the fifth year, you have to support yourself.

For Canadian PhD, they can work and register full-time on campus. What about us? Can we also do that?

Ottawa has requested a police record of my spouse.

Besides, my ECAS status has been changed to
"We received your application for permanent residence on December 16, 2011.
We started processing your application on June 27, 2012."

It might be just me since I appealed and got my NER reverted to PER recently.

I have a query for those applicants who submitted only their non TA/RA (other)work experience. Apart from experience letter, which other documents should be submitted as proof of work experience? Thx

That's good news. Having a canadian relative is really handy! When did you get the request?

I don't think we can actually. We are treated like garbage, aren't we? If I run out of funds, I will just quit, I'm sick of begging for a few dollars.

phdapplicant, congratulations :D !!!! You mentioned that they rejected your appeal regarding the adaptability points, if you don't mind sharing, what did you do to bring it up to their attention that you have a relative that's recently naturalized (or become PR)? Did you re-appeal?

Make sure though that in your experience letter, you got everything that they are requesting (job descriptions consistent with NOC 4012, total number of hours worked per week, period of employment, salary, etc). Technically, you don't really need anything else since it's not really mentioned in the checklist, but some extra documents (provided that there is no contradictory information) would not hurt. Try to submit anything that you have, and make sure, once again, everything is consistent and non-contradictory. Good luck with your applications, and keep us all updated :)

I mentioned it in the same appeal letter. Basically, they rejected the adaptability part, but gives me 5 points for gaining a Canadian relative between the time of application (Dec 2011) and assessment (June 2012).

Thanks a lot for your kind reply for all my questions. It helps a lot. It will take me several days more to finalize my application documents. Since the new release of FSW policy. Is it still a good idea to submit my application as soon as I can?

It seems for me, the sooner the better, so I plan to submit without the degree verification record. My education background is shown in my McGill transcripts. So I believe this can be counted as certain kind of verification of my degree obtained in china. I will apply for the verification just in case they ask for it later. Hope it is fine. Any suggestions regarding this?

Hmm... wondering with the change of policy earlier this year (March if I am not mistaken. This is just one of the many links I found on it, can't seem to find the original news on globe and mail or gazette - http://smartcanadian.ca/2012/06/17/temporary-resident-visa-can-be-applied-inside-canada/ )
would affect how we get our PR should any of us come to a conclusion with our application. What I have heard and have been hearing is that, when we finally get the green light to obtain our PR, we must cross the border e.g. into US is the easiest and then travel back to Canada to get the PR. Would that apply now?

I don't think you need a Canadian master's degree to apply for a PhD here. A lot of people in this forum obtained their master's in other countries. You just need to apply according to the requirements on each university's website.
