Hi cocoagirl, I think in my opinion it would be best if he takes up a short-course before applying to a school in Canada. It is a requirement for colleges and universities that international students have at least 12 years of formal education, which is why nirerequire nila ang mga applicants from the Philippines to have at least 2 years of college education (since wala pang K-12 noon). Also, CEM will check if your educational background is relevant to the course you're applying.

If his purpose is to have a degree from Canada and work there afterwards, then I would suggest that he enroll in a polytechnic and not a college. It's midway to a university and a college in Canada, and most people easily find jobs after earning their diploma because of the hands-on knowledge they acquire. If you're looking into Vancouver, I would suggest BCIT and Kwantlen Polytechnic, although sabi daw mas madali pumasok sa Langara College and the tuition is cheaper. As for Alberta, instead of NAIT, SAIT is more reputable :)

I really do hope for the best for your family. Galing po sa similar situation ang parents ko so somehow I can relate po. You guys deserve a break :(
Sir humdrumdum, thank you so much for your advice! I will look into available short courses, tama, it does make sense to get a short course, then go on to a polytechnic college afterwards. Double check ko lang, are short courses yung mga 6 months-1 year courses tama po ba? May mga nakita ako sa NAIT na mga courses na 1 year eh, they call it diploma courses, not sure if those are considered "short courses".

I think yung sagot po sa question niyo is kung ilang units pa po yung nirerequire ng college na gusto niyong applyan... Although para sure, I think a 1 or 2-year course po would do, although you'd have to take it here in Manila kasi baka hindi po mameet yung minimum requirements for admission in Canada.

Yes, diploma courses are usually 2 years long and certificate courses are 6 months to 1 year long. :) Depende na lang siguro sa school. Mabigat-bigat lang po usually ang full-time diploma courses because they cram everything in 2 years (average 30+ units per sem), so baka po mahirapan kayo if balak po maging working student ng husband nyo. Although depende rin po talaga which course you'd like to take. Some schools also offer special diplomas for Mature Students, those na may 5+ years gap. It would be advisable if you also look into that :D

Thank you! I'll go check out the options you posted. This is why I want to go along, para I can work and he can focus on studying nalang.

hi cocoagirl,

wag ka mawalan ng pag-asa. tama ung mga nag-advise to take muna a course degree here. my sister has a similar case, though undergrad sya in UE but I think nagstop sya during half of her 3rd year in UE and ECE ang course nya. Then she worked in Dubai for almost 8 years before she decided to finish her study in Canada. Try to check also University of Lethbridge in Alberta baka mas maluwag sila dun sa mga case ng hubby mo. My 2 sisters go there and my wife this coming January. If you want na makapag-aral si hubby mo na di masyadong gumastos I would suggest na mag-inquire kayo sa College of St. Benilde. Same case ako naman ng hubby mo, I almost did not finish my IT course in DLSU because of financial problem din. I worked for a year, then decided to go back to college. Sa College of St. Benilde ako nakapag-apply ulit kasi they have this CDP program (nigh class sya) na para sa mga working at medyo kapos sa budget. They can assess your hubby kung pasok sya sa scholarship program.

Thank you and good luck din sa inyo! :) Nag iinquire na ako sa mga technical schools/polytechnic schools in Canada, meron mga mature student course, and also meron din sila testing if you lack the units required. We're looking at automotive and heavy machine trade programs. Sana may makuha pang info.

I just told myself "This is a test. Good things come to people who are willing to wait."

hi! just want to ask gaano po ba katagal processing ng student visa? i submitted my application last may 24,2013 po. then after a week received an email na need ko na mag pa medical, nkapagmedical po ako July 4,2013, until now waiting parin ako sa email galing sa embassy :)

Maybe almost all of us are puzzled by that. Some are processed in a month, 2 months but some are now on the 4th or 5th month.

Hey DocRZ,

Any luck yet with the visa?

I am indeed puzzled. Renie, have you tried sending CEM a postal mail? I tried that one including the case-specific inquiry email. Don't know which one worked but definitely one of those two got their attention.

For the rest who's asking if my progress sa CEM, meron po! Hours ago, I just received an email from CEM requesting for my original passport :D Galing talaga ni Lord! :D

Hey Doda. My medical result hasn't been forwarded yet to the embassy. I will call the clinic tomorrow to request if they can prioritize my file. Hopefully they'll agree to my request and understand my situation.
