Dear All,

I am starting this thread to help everyone who will be moving to Nova Scotia- Halifax . It will be helpful if someone who is currently living in Nova Scotia- Halifax could explain the current status of Jobs Market and cost of living in and around Halifax region . Plenty of people are keen to move to NS-Halifax so it will help them to get connected . My question to people in NS-Halifax is that

1) IT Jobs (Networking,Administrators,Help-desk) In and around Halifax ?
2) Odd Jobs in Halifax ?
3) Cost of living (Housing Rent ,Grocery and transportation ) In and Around Halifax ?
4) Weather ?
5) Which Jobs are in Demand and easy to get ?

Waiting for some one to respond

Hi, I can't answer all your questions based on my experience. but I was in Halifax for a year ended up leaving the beautiful city in march, 2015. Why did you choose Halifax the place to move to, just curious? and how did you apply for PNP?

Unless someone is PNP, there are very less chances of someone trying to settle in states like NS, NB or PEI. I think most would stick to ON, BC or AB (if they get a job)

I am form NS

1) IT Jobs (Networking,Administrators,Help-desk) In and around Halifax ? - 3-4 companies in NS which provide these kind of jobs. As Dalhousie/SMU University is in Halifax companies prefer Dal Students over others therefore hunting job is not impossible but rely hard. Moreover the wages/salary compared to the other province(s) is rely low.

2) Odd Jobs in Halifax ? - Easy to find however you have to be open to everything. Tip for this is -- fake on your resume. I know guys you are going to hate me for this but its true.

3) Cost of living (Housing Rent ,Grocery and transportation ) In and Around Halifax ? - Rent is kind of normal depends where you want to live -- Attention there are some buildings which are BEDBUG infected
First, Harbour View Appt aka Ocean Towers. Second, Fenwick Towers. Third Scotia and Mackeen (Not fully infected currently)
Guys beware of first two places, never sing a lease there. Ocean and Fenwick are infected with bedbugs and if you rent there bedbugs will gradually enter your appt and destroy your furniture and wont let you sleep.

4) Weather ? - Summers are beautiful. NS have all the goodness of natural beauty like Parks, Beaches and waterfront. Winters are bit harsh as its near to the Atlantic ocean, cool breeze is hard to face. NS is kind of hilly area, you wont find straight roads so it becomes hard to drive in winter.

5) Which Jobs are in Demand and easy to get ? - Jobs are not easy. If you have the skills and experience (preferably Canadian exp) you can find a decent job. There are too many fresh and experience students which every year graduates from Dal and SMU which makes thing little difficult for the outlanders.

I almost know inside out of NS as its a small city. If you have any other question, feel free to ask.

Hi Naman, I was in Halifax for a year till Feb, 2015. I liked the city as its a small city without much hustle and bustle. Do you have any idea of how to apply for PNP?

Thank u for providing information. I am NS PNP applicants. I am a lawyer /tax consultant by profession presently preparing for upgrading exams. I hope once I qualify with Canadian education, things would be better. Kijiji tells that a 800-900$ two bedroom home (not basement) would be around 1500-2000$ in Toronto. So for initial years when most of us would be spending from our savings, Halifax is better place to be. Secondary, it is better than NB, PEI and Saskatchewan.
So be positive yes winters are concern but it is everywhere in Canada. Best of luck friends see u in Halifax...

That`s true you can save more and I have done the same as you mentioned sir. NS is the highest tax paying province and if you compare Halifax to Toronto I would rather prefer Toronto. You are certainly mistaken on the rent perspective. Both places have same rent power. Living in NS gives me a better overview. In 2015 (end) I got offer from a company located in ON and they were ready to pay me almost double for the same work, I was astonished. However I stayed due to my immigration.
I am not here to discriminate NS, its a wonderful place however is still in process of growth. ON or BC is the place where personal growth and opportunities can be found easily.
I landed in NS in 2012 and it was so hard at that point of time as how much I tried still could not find the food, spices, etc I needed to cook however in 2016 as the Indian population is grown things are drastically changed.

The best thing about NS is "IMMIGRATION" - pretty easy way to make points.

Obviously ur view would be more appropriate. My view is dependent on kijiji only.. ur words are motivating.let us see how NS treats us... hope it treats me and my family well. As per news i am getting, presently the weather is very bad in NS... best of luck to u for future

//Secondary, it is better than NB, PEI and Saskatchewan. //

How did you conclude this?! :)

You might want to check this link - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Canadian_provinces_and_territories_by_gross_domestic_product

May be better than slightly better NB, PEI, but overall it contributes less than 2% to Canadian economy. SK seems to be much better with 4% or so. Definitely long way to go for Atlantic provinces.

Saskatoon and regina are two place which have very high crime rate in canada also weather is much beter than SK... so may be economy is one of the factors but in totality halifax is much more famous than any of these provinces....

Naman and others for invaluable information for NS . I have applied for NS Immigration . I am looking for Jobs in IT Sector . What are the chances and pay-scale in and around Halifax for IT Jobs . And about winter how much will be the weather . Lastly how much salary we should have monthly to survive in NS for initial period of time .
