Hi all

This might be a dumb question but here goes anyway :p
After landing at a border and seeing the immigration officer, is it at THAT point you are a permanent resident? I am not currently working but want to start work as soon as possible so I'm not sure if I can work at that point or if I can work from receiving my COPR or my actual PR card

Thanks!

You can work since you have became a landed immigrant, i.e. from the moment you went with your COPR to see immigration officer at the border and finished the required procedures there. You don't need to wait for PR card.

You can work even before that as long as you have a work permit. :p

But if you dont have a WP - the moment you land, you are technically eligible to apply for your SIN with the COPR that has the entry date and time stamped on it by a CBSA officer. Once you get your SIN number, you can work.

Would the SIN number I currently have change though, since it starts with a 9, meaning it is a temporary number with am expiry date.

I am on a work permit now

You need to apply for new sin after landing.

Yes the SIN number changes. You need to go to Service Ontario (if u reside in ON) and they would process the papers and give you the new SIN number on the spot. The SIN card comes later but you can use the temporary documentation to apply for jobs etc.

I am presuming the same process is applicable for other provinces also.

I guess so, though CIC told me they are dropping the whole SIN card idea next year, since it was too much of a hassle for them. They would just give you a piece of paper with the number ;D . Got told this when I was talking to a CIC employee when I renewed my SIN card this year.
