adoption

Hi,

I have a few questions related to adoption..it would be extremely helpful if someone could help me out

My husband is a Canadian citizen, and I am a permanent resident of Canada (I was sponsored by him).

We have been married for a few years, but have not had any children. So I want to adopt a girl from one family I know who is very poor. This way it will help both of us. More than a parent, I want to be her guardian. I am undergoing clinical depression so it will help me. and the girl I want to adopt has to other way to come to canada, so it will help her as well (she is partially blind)

So my questions are :

1) Do I have to show a certain income for it ? (I know that my husband didn't have to do it for me, and I can't find the information on the CIC website, so I am confused).

2) The girl I want to sponsor is unable to see properly. I mean it is a partial blindness. So can we adopt her? or does her medical history prevent her from coming into Canada through sponsorship?

3) The girl I have mentioned above is 20 I think..so are we able to sponsor her? or does she have to be under a certain age?

Please let me know so I can proceed with the process.

Also,
I know there are two different process available. Through the regular process and the "grant of citizenship",
but I think for the grant of citizenship, the child has had to be adopted before he/she was 18

So is this true?

Certain requirements must be met in order for the adopted person to be eligible to be sponsored to become a permanent resident or to be granted citizenship. The adoption must:

- be in the best interests of the child
- create a genuine parent-child relationship that permanently severs the legal ties to the child’s biological parents
- be in accordance with the laws of the country where the adoption took place and the laws where the adoptive parents reside
- not have been entered into primarily for the purpose of acquiring a citizenship or immigration status or privilege.

If the adoption took place after the person turned 18, all the criteria listed above must be met (except for the “best interests of the child”), and there must have been a genuine parent-child relationship when the adoption took place and before the adopted person turned 18.

Have you acted as a parent to this girl since before she turned 18? If not, then I think you have your answer.

Yes, I read that part in the CIC website, and this is the reason I was confused.

One of my friends (who has not had any children, and she has been married for quite some years as well)..she sponsored her sister who was around 25 I think

but I am not sure if she became her guardian or if she followed a different procedures.
Plus it was 5-6 years ago, so the laws might have changed since then

but I am confused. I don't know how she was able to sponsor her sister. Plus for me, it is quite genuine. I mean if I am not able to bring this child, I can just adopt a younger one. But I also want to do it on a humanitarian ground.
