Do I need to have purchased a round trip plane ticket in order to apply for Canadian visitor's visa, or is it not mandatory?

No don't buy a ticket before getting a visa. You can submit a planned itinerary.
Thanks for the reply canuck78. Can I just type out the itinerary on MS Word and print it out? Will that be good enough? Or does it need to be more "official" looking?
That’s fine. The officers understand at this point you are just planning and travel is not certain.
