My BGC started on Jan 24th and is still in progress. However, my best recommendation is to review the spreadsheet for applications up till July 2019 when everything was running smoothly, then compare it with what's happening now for applicants from August 2019 and after...

When the BGC changes to "we are processing your background check", it means that they have started the background check.

According to https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/check-processing-times.html 128 Days as at July 28, 2020

At this stage I see no harm in contacting them. That said, others have waited longer. Look at @twgoundarmorton who got DM on July 24 but only got COPR yesterday.
