Wouldn't this be a case of "abuse/neglect" by the sponsor though? If the sponsored person informs CIC, even if they have conditional PR, they could be allowed to stay in Canada because it is not their fault they were misled.

What if the US spouse isn't working? Would they still have to file taxes with their (Canadian) spouse's income? I feel this is definitely going to be a huge headache come 2017.

Don't know if this will be helpful, but my husband (Canadian) has an American Express credit card and it's really useful when he visits the U.S. or makes online payments. It seems to be pretty widely accepted now-days.
