Yes, I read it somewhere that this is possible. Just take whatever documents you applied with, write a cover letter stating your passport expiry and you're good to do. I've read stories on here of people doing the same thing and getting the extension.

Don't worry, you should have had it by now and if you haven't then tomorrow If you applied via VFS then go pick it up at their office.
