You could try contacting MPs outside your riding. It may not work, but occasionally other MPs are more receptive to helping in these situations. I've seen it mentioned here a few times that people have tried this and gotten results. Certainly no guarantees, but might be worth a try?

I think this falls squarely into the "I don't know" realm. I would assume, just like everything else they do, it would be up to the individual immigration officer reviewing their file to determine if it would be treated differently or not. Some might take a harder look, some may not. Honestly...
