My passport will expire before the 2 year visas up(for nz),Do i need i replaced before i apply for my visa or before i arrive in Canada?

I tried applying twice last year,First time it said the CAL was valid for 3months then the second time is was valid for 15days?I've no idea why that was..which is why it was refused as i thought it was valid for 3months..
