Yes, I remember reading somewhere (maybe on a Canadian Embassy/High Commission site) that all new applicants are going to be automatically considered for a multiple entry visa for as much as 10 years. I think it is they who determine what period to actually give you. EDIT: Found the exact link...

Hey, I did the exact same thing. Once I saw the email was from CIC, I just quickly ran through searching for those precious words ;D. Once I found those, instant celebration :D!! It was a good 5-10 minutes before I went back and read the full email, even down to the disclaimer at the end, lol.

I know before you had to specify when applying whether you wanted single or multiple entry for visitors visa. Since recently, they only giving multiple entry. Seems like they've cut out the single entry ones.

Congrats. Btw, in the PER email it should tell what date your DD was cashed. It would say something along the lines of "receipt dated xxx".

Oscar +1 for strongly advocating the use of DDs (with 6 month validity) instead of CCs. Although the latter has the added advantage of letting you know when CIC takes payment of your fees, I would take a week more of waiting (to get PER) any day over the bank cancelling the card and putting...
